BURKE COUNTY 4-H
Providing a world
of opportunities
By Rebekah Bowen
Burke County Extension Agent, 4-H
For over 100 years, rural and urban youth have had the op
portunity to broaden their horizons through the fun, hands-on
learning opportunities provided by Georgia 4-H. This nation
wide youth program helps to foster the development of essen
tial skills such as mastery, belonging, independence and gener
osity.
In Burke County, we carry on the 4-H tradition by engaging
youth in a myriad of active learning projects. Interested youth
have the opportunity to join a judging team and build critical
thinking and reasoning skills, while also learning content area
knowledge about dairy cattle, consumer products, poultry, for
estry and wildlife. For those not interested in a judging team,
we offer quiz bowls, public speaking competitions, cooking
projects, performing arts groups and much more.
We strive to provide positive youth development opportuni
ties to youth from all across Burke County. The 4-H program
is open to any Burke County youth age 9 to 19, and there is no
charge to join! Monthly club meetings are held throughout the
year for students in 5 th -12 th grade. Our students are involved in
numerous projects and events throughout the year including
livestock shows, project presentations, consumer judging, for
estry judging, club meetings, community service projects, lead
ership conferences, and so much more!
While I may be new to Burke County, I am not new to the
world of 4-H. I began my 4-H career in 1996 when my Dad
and I purchased my first show heifer from a local dairy farm.
Since then, I have been offered a world of opportunities that I
would not have received had it not been for my active partici
pation in 4-H. From serving as a Legislative Page at the Geor
gia Capitol to attending National 4-H Congress, I have been
involved in numerous projects and events that have truly made
me the person I am today. Obviously, I must have liked the
program because I stuck around and made a career out of 4-H
I understand that all 4-H’ers who attend a 5 th grade club
meeting will not want to grow up to be a 4-H Agent. However,
I truly hope that each 4-H member in Burke County will choose
to take advantage of all the many programs, activities and events
that our 4-H program has to offer. There is such an incredible
potential for students in this community to succeed in 4-H. I
truly believe that 4-H is about helping 4-H’ers find out what
they are good at and what they enjoy. Then, we can use that
knowledge to motivate them to grow in that area, as well as
applying those skills and talents to creating a successful future
for themselves.
Burke County 4-H belongs to YOU - the young people and
the community. We at the Extension Office invite you to join
our team to "Make the Best, Better.” For more information on
Burke County 4-H Clubs and getting involved as a member or
an adult volunteer, call the Burke County Extension Office at
