Advance voting begins in three cities

Advance voting begins Mon
day for five races in three Burke
County cities.
Voters in Sardis and Keysville
will decide who will be mayor;
and in Waynesboro, seven can
didates are in the running for
three city council seats.
Early birds can cast their bal
lots through Nov. 1, then in-
person voting will cease until the
Nov. 5 General Election. The
winners will take office on Jan.
1, 2014.
Historically, more and more
Burke County residents are vot
ing prior to Election Day.
In the big 2012 General Elec
tion, which included the presi
dential and state races, some
4,372 Burke County voters cast
their ballots early - 1,225 by
mail and 3,147 in person.
Those voters accounted for a
whopping 44.4 percent of the
total turn-out.
Ward 1: Longtime councilman Dick Byne is challenged by
newcomer Kevin Tyner.
Ward 2: Vice-mayor James “Chick” Jones will square off
against former State Representative Alberta Anderson.
Ward 3: Portia Washington is finishing her first term in a
three-way race against former Ward 3 councilmen Willie Roy
Williams and Curtis Bell.
SARDIS MAYOR
Vote 8 a.m.- 1 p.m. Thursdays and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. all other
weekdays at Sardis City Hall, 713 Charles Perry Avenue
Incumbent Preston Conner faces former mayor John
Hamilton and previous challenger Geneva Wilkerson.
KEYSVILLE MAYOR
Vote noon- 5p.m. at Keysville City Hall, 120 Old Waynesboro
Road
Three women are up for the office that will be left open
when Mayor Maggie Cartwright retires on Dec. 31. Candi
dates are Linda Wilkes, Rubye Rucker and Annette Wash
ington.
