210™ HOMECOMING
We folks at Sardis Baptist
Church celebrated our 210th an
niversary with a Homecoming on
Sunday, September 22,2013. The
house of worship was packed. I
believe over 300 people heard The
Reverend Doctor Bill King deliver
a stirring message of how the Holy
Spurt has and is working in Sardis
Baptist Church. Doctor King is a
former pastor of our Church and
he touched the hearts of many with
his fiery sermon. At the end of the
service many came down to the
altar to pray and give thanks to
God, while others came to accept
Christ as Savior and others to join
this Church. Now this may not
have been our 210th Homecom
ing, but eveiy year for 210 years
this Church has thanked and
praised God for its existence.
After Doctor King’s splendid
sermon, after people accepting and
rededicating to Christ, after
prayers by many, we retreated to
the fellowship hall where a bounty
of the Lord’s blessings awaited us.
Over 300 people were there, but
there was enough food to feed a
thousand or more. What a sump
tuous feast was put before us.
Most, like I did, partook of much
more than needed and still there
was food galore. But feasting from
those tables was greatly surpassed
by the fellowship that was en
joyed. How good it was to see old
friends and how wonderful to greet
and meet new ones. Our fellow
ship hall was filled with tables of
food and tables at which to eat.
Many Sunday School rooms had
tables and outside on the lawn we
additional tables, all filled to ca
pacity. Though rain had been pre
dicted, it was a day full of bright
sunshine and a comfortable tem
perature. God is good, always.
I find it simply amazing that
after two hundred and ten years,
God is still working at full speed
in this small rural church. "His eye
is on the sparrow, so I know He
watches Sardis Baptist Church”.
Just a few months ago there were
those who were ready to let Satan
take over Sardis Baptist, but our
loving God had different ideas.
The Holy Spirit was sent forth to
push Satan from our midst. With
the Holy Spirit directing our new
pastor the Reverend Nick Bates,
our church has made a complete
turn around and he is, with God’s
help leading our church forward
with astonishing speed. How awe
some is the work of God through
the Holy Spirit. I believe that God
has much work for this Church to
do, and that means that every in
dividual member will have work
assigned to them. I further believe
that the Holy Spirit will have His
hand on the shoulder of each of us
directing us in our task.
As I have already related it was
a grand day, a grand reunion, a
grand anniversary and a grand
Homecoming where we, as ‘The
Family of God’, came together in
worship and fellowship. How
good it was to see folks we had
not seen in many days, but there
were those of us who thought of
that great and wonderful Home
coming in th sky. Just think of
what a glorious day that will be
when we all see one another in the
presence of Jesus. That day can
not compare with any earthly
Homecoming and it will never
end, for that day will go on for
eternity. Oh! How words fail me
when I seek to describe such a day
and such an event. There we will
experience the wonders of won
ders, the delights of delights, the
glories of glories, and the Living
God of the Universe.
I hope it is your desire to be at
that Heavenly Homecoming. A
ticket to that wonderful event is
available and assured for you sim
ply by putting your faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ. It is a gift from
God Almighty, our Loving Heav
enly Father. You do not have to
pay or work for it. Just believe in
Jesus and reach out and take it.
What a wonderful gift!!

ALWAYS A GIRL SCOUT
There are a few
things in my life of
which I am proud
to speak about ...
my faith in God
and His church; my
43 years of mar
riage to my late
husband LaVern
Williams; my chil
dren, grandchildren
and great-grand
children; my 25
years of writing for
The True Citizen as
a country corre
spondent for the
weekly column
Green’s Cut News, which in
cluded things of interest about
community churches, friends
and neighbors and also included
Burke County folks and the sur
rounding central Savannah
River communities; and my
years of being a Girl Scout.
For all these, I have been rec
ognized in many
special ways. The
most recent recog
nition, surprisingly
enough, came
when a neighborly
friend Hugh Scott
called to tell me
that a photo of me
posing in my Girl
Scout uniform was

The most infor
mative article is
about the 101 st Anniversary of
the Girl Scouts and its founder
Juliette Gordon Low of Savan
nah - who simply helped to put
purpose in so many young girls’
lives. I personally had the great
privilege of getting to know,
love and be inspired by a strict
loving woman Mary Stone, our
scout leader. She is well remem-
Cliff
bered as the late Mrs.
Hargrove.
Under her leadership our
troop gathered each month at the
Girl Scout hut in Waynesboro.
It was located in the exact spot
Burke Medical Center sits today.
We enjoyed fun and fellowship
and polished our skills in hik
ing, camping, swimming, danc
ing, health and safety- emer
gency training, sewing, weav
ing and handcrafts, as well as
helping others at all times. We
obeyed the Girl Scout Law at
all times or the belt-line pun
ishment would be carried out!
Whew! I am thankful that all
my troop and I were able to stay
on the straight and narrow to
escape that punishment.
Now, you readers can know
how proud I am for serving all
those years ago in the Girl Scout
organization because each thing
I learned helped me become a
better person. That is especially
Letters to the Editor
EDITOR:
I was so excited to read the ar
ticle earlier this year about what a
difference recycling has made in
our county. It stated that nearly 45
tons of recyclables were diverted
from our local landfill in 2012.
That is amazing!
Kudos to the people of Burke
County who are willing to recycle.
Thanks to the recycling bin located
on Council Street in the police
station’s parking lot and the news
paper/magazine bin located in
Harvey’s parking lot, this has been
achieved.
I used to think that the word
recycle meant a lot of work, but
it’s really very simple to do. When
you get in the habit of separating
your regular perishable waste from
your recyclable waste, before you
know it you have more to recycle
than to throw away.
We would also see a difference
in the trash on our county road
sides too because most of it is re
cyclable.
I encourage everyone to recycle.
Who knows, maybe one day we
might even have our very own
recycling plant right here in Burke
County. Wouldn’t that be great?
