According to the 2010 Burke County Census, Burke County's
population grew 4.8 percent between 2000 and 2010. While births
accounted for much of the 1,073-resident increase, a number of
people moved here from other counties, states and countries. So
what brings folks to Burke County and what do they love most?

WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?
That big ‘ol hole in the ground... Vogtle units 3 and 4.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT NEW MEXICO?
The beautiful Sandia Mountains and the almost perfect
weather.
BESTTHING ABOUT BURKE COUNTY?
It’s beautiful here... the trees, the wildlife, the laid back,
slower pace of things.
WORST THING?
Feeling like an outsider. Despite countless attempts to
make a connection with people here, it’s not been easy.
Although the friends I have locally now are numerous,
without exception every one of them is from some
where besides Burke County. It feels as if there is a
language or cultural barrier that’s been difficult to get
past. As someone who enjoys people and getting to
know others, this has been the most difficult thing to
overcome since relocating.
BEST SOUTHERN SAYING?
Hands down ... "Bless Your Heart." The ambiguity
makes me laugh. I have been told it can mean anything
from “Bless You” to something not quite as nice. It’s fun
to try to guess which it is whenever it’s said!
• Owner of Nail Time
• Lives in Waynesboro
• Moved here in 2008 from
New York, N.Y. Was born
on an American army base
in Phu Bai, Vietnam but has
lived all over the U.S. includ
ing Fon Du Lac, Wise., Chicago,
IL. and Hartford, Conn.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?
Change, honestly. After owning and operating the Royal
Spa International (manufacturer) in Bloomfield, Conn,
and seven nail supply companies in New York I wanted a
simpler life. I happened upon a nail salon for sale in
Waynesboro and I fell in love with the city the first minute
I saw it. I’m settled... .this is it.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUTTHE BIG APPLE?
The hustle and bustle .... the food, the shopping, the
constantly staying busy. I especially miss the food mar
kets selling fresh seafood and being able to buy kabobs
at street stands. I also miss having a cup of coffee and
a New York bagel with cream cheese.
BESTTHING ABOUT BURKE COUNTY?
The community. It has been absolutely wonderful. The
people always have a warm welcome and they are just
like family. I love living in a community where people pick
each other up.
WORST THING?
We need more development in Downtown Waynesboro
so there can be more business.
BEST SOUTHERN SAYING?
“Hey Y’all” (with a smile)

nally from Richmond, Va.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?
husband Gaines is from
Waynesboro and we met my freshman year at Univer
sity of Georgia. He took a job in Waynesboro after gradu
ating and I moved to Augusta and was fortunate enough
to get a job at Burke County Middle School that same
year. After we got married two years later, I made “the
big move to the small town” as we joke.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT VIRGINIA?
My mom, dad, brother and sister. I miss them every
day.
BESTTHING ABOUT BURKE COUNTY?
I love being close to my husband’s family, and I also love
how welcoming everyone is here.
WORST THING?
I wish Burke County had more things to do on the
weekends, like a movie theater, shops and more res
taurants.
BEST SOUTHERN SAYING?
“I’m fixing to...” I had never heard it before dating Gaines
and now use it more than I care to admit.
BILL ALSTON, AGE 64
• Retired police officer
• Lives in Waynesboro
• Moved from Queens, N.Y.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU
HERE?
My wife is from Midville and in
the 1980s we bought a house here.
When I retired, we decided to move South.
good old New York pastrami... I can’t find anything like
it here. I also miss Lox, which we bought at Jewish delis
and markets.
BESTTHING ABOUT BURKE COUNTY?
No sirens and noise all night long. People are also more
open and friendly and you don’t have to watch your
back every time you walk down the street.
WORST THING?
Everything closes at noon on Saturdays.
AMY PHILLIPS, AGE 28
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT NEW YORK? BEST SOUTHERN SAYING?
Taking our daughter to visit the Statue of Liberty. And "Don’t count your chickens until they hatch."
• Sales assistant, William Mizell
Ford
• Lives in Waynesboro
• Moved from McCormick,
S.C. in 5 th grade
WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?
My grandmother. She purchased land
here because she wanted a better life for us.
WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA?
Being able to be at the lake in a matter of minutes. It was
just a short walk through the woods from our house and
we went there almost every day after school and during
the summer.
BESTTHING ABOUT BURKE COUNTY?
It’s a more developed county than McCormick but still
small enough to not be overwhelmed by the fast life
of living in a big city. We have just enough restaurants
and businesses to not have to travel to a major city all
the time just for groceries.
WORST THING?
I really have nothing bad to say about Burke County.
I love living here and raising my daughter here.
BEST SOUTHERN SAYING?
“Bless your heart” and “Karma’s a witch.”
