Welcome from Burke
County High School's
new principal
Greetings Students, Staff, Parents and Community Members:
It is with extreme gratitude
that I give thanks to Superin
tendent Rudy Falana and the
Burke County Board of educa
tion for providing me with the
opportunity to serve as the new
Principal of Burke County High
School. Words cannot describe
how grateful I am to serve as
Principal in this great communi
ty- the place I call, “HOME”! I
promise to lead with dignity and
respect not only for the students
and staff of Burke County High
School, but also for this entire
community. It is with enormous
pride that I accept the responsi
bility of leading Burke County
High School to a “First-Class”
organization. My commitment
to you is to ensure that we, at
BCHS, educate all students with
a quality education while main
taining high expectations that
lead to post-secondary success.
I would like to take this op
portunity to provide all stake
holders with an overview of
my diverse background which
has prepared me for this posi
tion. Most recently, I served
as a Central Office Director
of Human Capital Allotments,
Finance, Budgets, and Schedul
ing for 138 schools within the
DeKalb County School District
located in Stone Mountain,
Georgia. During my tenure
there, DeKalb County Schools
moved from a $20 million dollar
deficit to a $124 million dollar
surplus while at the same time
increasing instructional and
support staff in all areas, as well
as lowered class sizes. I am
entering my twentieth year in
education. My career includes
nineteen years as an educator
in the following areas: Elemen
tary, Middle and High School
Teacher, Special Education
Teacher, Assistant Coach, Head
Coach, Middle School Assistant
Principal, High School Assistant
Principal, Curriculum Direc
tor, Director of Athletics, High
School Principal and Central
Office Administrator. I believe
that my past experiences have
afforded me the opportunity
to have a wealth of knowledge
in the areas of Curriculum and
Instruction, Professional Learn
ing, Data Analysis, Organiza
tion Development, Athletics,
Strategic Planning, Scheduling,
Allotments, Budgets, Staffing,
Finance, Federal Programs,
SACS Accreditation, FTE/Stu-
dent Record, and School Im
provement.
My vision is to effectively
collaborate with all stakeholders
to build a “First-Class” organi
zation that is second to none. We
want our students to maximize
their potential so that when they
graduate from BCHS, they are
college and career ready. Burke
County High School will be
a place that is inviting, safe,
orderly, nurturing and instruc-
tionally sound, not from “bell
to bell”, but from “bus to bus”.
Our school should be built on
a strong foundation that is sup
ported by high expectations
for everyone. As Principal, it
is my hope that all stakeholder
(students, parents, faculty and
staff, community members,
central office staff and board
members) will join me in estab
lishing and rebranding “THE”
(Think Higher Expectations)
Burke County High School,
with a sense of urgency, pride
and purpose, as a “First-Class”
school- where there is “Victory
in Every Classroom”.
I hope that everyone is enjoy
ing the final weeks of summer
break and that it was a safe and
fun time for all. I would like
to take this time to welcome
the students, parents, and staff
members back to school starting
August 3, 2016. The beginning
of a new school year is a time
of excitement and a time of
challenge. We are extremely
excited about the progress that
was made during the previ
ous year as BCHS improved
the graduation rate. This was
a great accomplishment that
should be shared by everyone.
We are even more excited about
the great challenge of improving
the academic achievement in all
subject area, which has to be and
will be the main focus. This is
a challenge that all stakeholders
should take a vested interest in.
We must be All In to be First
Class to achieve Victory in Ev
ery Classroom at “THE” Burke
County High School
Teaching the youth of our
community is one of the great
est opportunities that could be
given to a group of educators.
Education takes everyone work
ing together. Former President
of the United States of America,
John F. Kennedy, said "Let
us think of education as the
means of developing our great
est abilities, because in each of
us there is a private hope and
dream which, fulfilled, can be
translated into benefit for ev
eryone and greater strength for
our nation." The Burke County
High School staff looks forward
to working with the parents and
community to provide a year of
educational opportunities and a
quality education for the youth
of Burke County. This type of
“First Class” education enables
each student to have the courage
and academic understanding to
reach for any goal and over
come any challenge. Develop
ing courage and backing it with
hard work will help allow each
student to have the confidence in
their abilities. It takes a sincere
belief in being All In to be First
Class to achieve Victory in Ev
ery Classroom to be successful.
Please join us on July 31,
2016 from 3:00 - 5:00 for Open
House and Meet-Greet the New
BCHS Principal. During this
time students and parents will
have the opportunity to view
their schedules and meet their
teachers who will be sharing
important information regarding
the curriculum, their expecta
tions, and special classroom
events that will occur through
out the school year.
Please also keep in mind the
following key points that are
important to starting the year
off smoothly.
• Make your child’s atten
dance to school a priority.
• Ensure "THE” BCHS is a
topic of positive discussion in
your home each night.
• The dress code policy will be
strictly enforced starting the first
day of school. All students are
required to be 100% within the
dress code starting on the first
day of school.
• Take a vested interest in your
child’s education which is the
key to their future well-being.
• Return all requested forms
and documents to school in a
timely manner.
The normal school day will
start at 7:50 a.m. and end at 3:00
p.m. Student's schedules will be
available to view on August 3,
2016 during Open House. Be
sure to visit the BCHS Website
by going to www.burke.kl2.
ga.us and then click on Burke
County High School. All up
coming activities and events
along with classroom activities
and events are posted there.
Once again, welcome back to
another exciting school year. I
want to challenge each student
to enter school on the first day
expecting this to be a positive
and successful school year.
With deepest Gratitude,
Dr. Kaveous K. Preston
