Forest Ridge is not only a
neighborhood in Waynesboro,
but it's also a place where the
community can come together
in unity. This neighborhood
hosts several events a month
and would like to see more
participation from those in the
community that do not reside
in the area. One of their major
yearly events is the crowning of
the Miss Forest Ridge Queen.
This year’s Queen is Mrs. Ola
Mae Roberson. She will reign
until she takes her final stroll
in July 2017. On Tuesday, Miss
Forest Ridge made her appear
ance at the monthly Elder Care
event, where they have different
speakers come and give presen
tations. Mr. Flarrison Simpson
came to talk about the
importance of voting
and taught those who
attended how to use
the voting machine.
Mrs. Isabel Harper
is the Event Coordina
tor for Forest Ridge
and is planning many
other enjoyable events
for people to attend.
She would like to in
vite the public to the
following events that
are taking place this
month:
Neighborhood Watch with the WPD, August 17 at 1 p.m. (every
third Wednesday in the month)
A Game of Bingo, August 23 at 10 a.m.
Birthday Celebration, August 25 at 2 p.m.
To find out more about Forest Ridge and their events, contact
their office at 706-554-7270.
BCHS SENIOR ATTENDS TURNER
SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Zoe’Swanna McGee, a senior
at Burke County High School
was selected to attend an elite
summer leadership institute
through 21st Century Lead
ers, in partnership with Turner
Broadcasting. Turner Voices
Youth Media Institute is a week-
long media-focused leadership
development program at Geor
gia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia that
is fully sponsored by Turner.
This summer program took
place June 19-24, 2016. “It’s a
wonderful example of a diverse
group of our future leaders
pursuing their leadership de
velopment with executives from
Turner, and a local company’s
commitment to our youth,”
said Kate Hewitt, Director of
Programs and Operations for
21st Century Leaders.
This exclusive, week-long
institute is a media focused
leadership development pro
gram. Turner and 21st Century
Leaders were proud to have
75 unique and talented high
school leaders coming from
over 55 high schools and 23
counties throughout Georgia.
McGee, along with the other
participants, got a true “behind
the scenes” look into the Turn
er Broadcasting System and
its networks, including CNN,
Turner Sports, TBS, TCM, and
Cartoon Network. Each day,
the students participated in
workshops, tours, and discus
sion groups on a range of topics
within the media industry. In
addition, students participated
in panels and mentoring ses

and talent including Turner
Content Distribution President,
Coleman Breland, CNN Student
News Anchor Carl Azuz, and
executives from Turner Sports,
Cartoon Network, and TBS.
Know Your Status as a Voter
By: Michaela Carter
Mcarter.truecitizen@gmail.com
In order to participate in the
upcoming elections, it is impor
tant that you know your status as
a voter. If you have not voted in
two major elections, your name
has been placed on the “inac
tive” list. However, you can still
vote in the next major election
which will result in you becom
ing an active voter again. If you
have not voted in three major
elections, your name has been
taken off of the voter list which
means you are ineligible to vote.
In order to be considered an
active voter
again, you
will have to
re-register. If
you are a fel
on, you can
become eli
gible to vote
once you
have com
pleted all of
your judicial
obligations.
To find out more about the 706-554-7457 or burkereg@
voting requirements, contact burkecounty-ga.gov.
