Bears to fight the Warriors Friday
By David Stembridge

The Burke County Bears will
battle the Warriors in Grovetown
this Friday night in their first
regular season game.
The match-up will be the first
in Bear history, and Head Coach
Eric Parker says the game will
be the first hard glimpse at how
the Burke County Bears are re
ally doing.
“It's always exciting to get
the season started. We didn't
get the chance to play a scrim
mage game so this is really our
first time out as a football team
for the 2016 campaign,” he
said, noting the Warriors were
defeated by Thomson last week
end in their open scrimmage.
“The kids have been working
hard and I think defensively
we’ve got a chance to be pretty
good before it’s over with; but
right now at this moment, Em
not really sure where we are.”
While the Warriors appear to
lack depth, the Bears will be
facing a team with both good
size and good speed.
Coach Parker is expecting a
challenge.
“It’s not like a scrimmage, it
actually counts,” he said, point
ing out the Bears will be there to
win the ballgame. “We haven't
had a chance to work all the
kinks out so we’ll have to make
adjustments as we go.”
Junior quarterback Bill Knight passes the ball during practice
Monday afternoon. Knight and Sophomore Damari Kelly will
be sharing the quarterback starting position for the Bears
this season.

LADY BEAR SENIORS STEPPING UP TO PLATE
Senior Kayla Lambert scores the only run against Grovetown
after sophomore Kaity Godbee hits an RBI.

The Lady Bears began
their season with a rocky
start; but Head Coach Lee
Smoaks believes they will
be able to lean on senior
leadership this year, and
that will make a difference
“The seniors have all had
considerable playing time
over the past few years and
we are hoping this means
good team chemistry and
consistent play,” he said.
Monday night the Lady
Bears fell to Grovetown,
6-1. They had a lone run
in the second inning after
a groundout by sophomore
Kaity Godbee brought in
senior Kayla Lambert.
Coach Smoak said that
both of their pitchers from
last year are returning and he
hopes for their effectiveness to
improve; but wants to see the
defense improve.
"We have always had con
sistent hitting but we are really
hoping our defense steps it up
from the year past.”

The Burke County volleyball
team has started its season right.
They defeated the Baldwin
Braves last Thursday, 25-7 and
25-6.
Head Coach David Skinner
said the team is fortunate to
be bringing back four talented
starters, and they've had several
underclassmen to step up and
play significant roles on their
roster.
“They've had a great off
season program, and worked
extremely hard.” Coach Skinner
said. "Our players are eager
to continue the progress our
program has made and are com- on Thursday starting at 5 p.m.,
mitted to achieving a new level and their first home match is
of success.” next Thursday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m.
The Netters play Westside against Butler,
and Greenbrier in a tri-match
