By Elizabeth Billips

The alleged gunman has been
jailed following a weekend
shooting in Girard.
Sardis resident Dereck Chris
topher Hilton, 28, was arrested
early Sunday morning after
gunfire broke out at a large
block-party on Corn Road.
“There were a couple of hun
dred people there ... maybe
more,” said Sgt. Dedric Smith
of the Burke County Sheriff’s
Office.
Investigators are not yet sure
what precipitated the shooting
but confirmed Marion Rashad
Jordan, 26, was wounded in
the thigh.
When officers arrived on the
scene around 1:30 a.m., wit
nesses reported seeing Hilton
fire the shot.
They also said that a second
man, whose name has not yet
been released, was seen stomp
ing the victim after he was down
on the ground.
Hilton had fled the scene
but was arrested a short time
later after Sardis police detained
him during a traffic stop, the
report said. He is charged with
aggravated assault and pos
session of a firearm during the
commission of a crime, along
with driving with a suspended/
Dereck Christopher Hilton
revoked license and other traffic
violations.
Jordan was transported to an
Augusta hospital with injuries
that were not considered life
threatening.

Another suspect has been
arrested in a July 3 shoot
ing that left three people
wounded.
DrequanTe’Marius Gaines,
19, was jailed last Monday
after GBI agents tracked him
down in Savannah where he
had been attending school.
“He was identified fairly
early on in the investigation,”
said Pat Morgan, Special
Agent in charge of the GBI
Thomson Office. "It was a
matter of finding him.”
Agents had already arrested
18-year- old Juwan Laroy Pres
ton of Waynesboro, who was
also identified as one of the
gunmen who opened fire at the
large block-party in the Wash
ington Place neighborhood in
Waynesboro.
More arrests are expected as
the investigation continues.
“There were more [people]
than these two shooting,” Spe
cial Agent Morgan confirmed.
Gaines is charged with three
counts of aggravated assault
- one count for each person
wounded by gunfire.
