Priest’s killer tries to hang himself again
By Elizabeth Billips

An inmate accused of mur
dering a Florida priest and
dumping his body in Burke
County has attempted to kill
himself again.
Steven James Murray re
mains under suicide watch
at the Clayton County Jail
outside Atlanta after trying
to hang himself twice on
Saturday.
Burke County Sheriff Greg
Coursey said he was notified
by Clayton County Sheriff
Victor Hill just after jailers
found Murray and cut him
down.
He had reportedly left a note
saying he did not want to live.
“Then he tried to do it a
second time,” Sheriff Coursey
said, noting Murray was taken
to a hospital and then placed
in the jail infirmary on suicide
watch.
Prosecutors are seeking the
death penalty against Murray,
who is accused of kidnapping
71-year-old Father Rene Rob
ert of St. Augustine, shooting
him to death and then dumping
his body in the woods of Burke
County.
He has been in jail since
April when authorities caught
him driving Father Robert’s
missing vehicle in South Caro
lina and were eventually led to
the body.
Murray has since bounced
from jail to jail, beginning in
Burke County where he tried
to hang himself with a bed
sheet on May 31. He was trans
ferred to Jefferson County but
wore out his welcome when
he broke a pipe and flooded
the cells.
Sheriff Coursey hopes Mur
ray will remain in the Clayton
County Jail, which is much
larger and better equipped to
handle disruptive behavior.
In the meantime, jailers here
will be driving back and forth
to fetch Murray as his death
penalty case progresses.
“We had six hours of driv
ing for ten minutes in court,”
Sheriff Coursey said, referring
to an Aug. 15 court appearance
which was over in a matter of
minutes.
Murray will be back in
Burke County on Sept. 16 for
his arraignment.
