LETTERTO THE EDITOR
Remembering Richard McDaniel ...
teacher and friend
EDITOR:
Recently Burke County agriculture lost a giant,
and I lost a teacher and a friend.
When Richard McDaniel came to Burke Coun
ty in 1994, no one in the agricultural community
knew how to take him. He was very serious,
confident, and to the point. You may not like the
answer to the question that you had asked him,
but you knew it was honest, and the truth. The
better I got to know him the more confidence I
had in his answer. Once he asked me why he was
having poor turnout at Extension crop produc
tion meetings. He said it looked bad on his job
performance at the state level. My response was,
“anything that we hear at the production meetings
you have already had us doing for three years.”
As time passed Richard retired from The Uni
versity Extension Service. He started working as
a crop consultant for a group of farmers that own
Screven Gin, of which I am a member. He was
much more than that. When he went to work for
us, it was as if someone had released the reins
and let him run. He would tell not just what was
proven ten times, but what he thought.
He started showing and teaching me things
that I would have never expected. I don’t think
that I have ever been a poor farmer, but Richard
made me better. I also know that I am not the
only person that could say this because, he was
the most evenhanded person I have ever met.
I knew Richard 22 years, and I only heard him
make derogatory comments about anyone or
anything twice. Those comments were earned.
When Richard became sick and went to Hous
ton many of us that depended on him were lost.
We leaned on people that we were not accus
tomed to depending on. That is when I realized
Richard had not been advising me, he had been
teaching me.
I have papers on the wall that say I have an edu
cation. I have had some great teachers throughout
my educational process. My Daddy taught me
how to work and farm, but Richard taught me
how to thrive. A friend of mine refers to Richard
as The-Old-Wise-One, and he lived up to that.
Men like Richard don’t come around often, and
I am glad he and I were here at the same time.
Jane, April, Jenifer, and the rest of Richard’s
family lost much more than I did. I lost a good
friend and my teacher. He fought the good fight
and kept the faith, but Richard will always be
walking my fields.
Chris Mallard, farmer
Girard
