Spartans fall to Bucs in
Backyard Battle 2016
By: Kristy Collier Smith
kristycolliersmith@yahoo.com
The Edmund Burke Acad
emy Varsity Spartans fell hard
to the Briarwood Buccaneers
last Friday night in what they
hoped would be the first win of
the season.
Coming off a disappointing
7-point loss to Thomas Jef
ferson Academy in week-one,
the Spartans (0-2) were hungry
for a win.
The Bucs scored first in the
second quarter for a 7-0 lead.
In the second half, the Spartans
came out looking to tie up the
ballgame. They recovered two
Briarwood fumbles, but could
never set up to score.
Briarwood aggressively
scored 13 points in the third
quarter and 6 more in the fourth
quarter. In the end, the Spartans
were shut out with a final score
of 26-0 and their second loss of
the season.
Junior Kyler Deason, who
is this week’s Planters EMC
Power Player of the Game for
EBA, led in rushing with 13
carries totaling 58 yards. Senior
Daniel Meeks had 6 carries for
31 yards.
Defensively, two Spartan
sophomores led their team in
tackles against Briarwood. Trent
Harris had 8 tackles and Collier
Smith had 7. The two fumble
recoveries were made by junior
Ashley Clark and sophomore
Jordan Walden
COACH'S CORNER
Comments from Head Coach Charlie Fates:
“We are struggling to play consistent football right
now. Our guys are working hard in practice every week
to get better. But we must transfer this work onto the
field on Friday nights. Football games are won by play
ers consistently making plays. We hope to see this as we
grow and mature.”

The Spartans head to Westminster in Augusta
Friday night. The Wildcats are 1-1 after losing
their season opener to Briarwood, 41-14, and
beating Thomas Jefferson last week, 48-42.
Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
One of the guys
Tucker McClellan, son of Ray and Ashlie McClellan of Waynesboro, had the time of his life on Friday, August 26 when he got
to be "one of the guys" on the varsity football squad at EBA. His parents won the prize at the 2016 Spartan Rock Auction
in the spring. Tucker participated with the team at the pep rally, the pre-game devotional in the locker room with Pastor Al
Wright, and a pre-game meal provided by the varsity parents. That evening he warmed up on the field with the boys, ran out
with them through the banner and stayed on the sidelines the entire ballgame. He said his favorite thing about the experience
was hearing the locker room devotional and hanging out on the sidelines. Pictured above is Tucker with Collier Smith, Tyson
Post, Kyler Deason, and Jaylon Glisson.
