In a series of days, several
Waynesboro residents reported
their vehicles were broken into
over night.
According to a number of
reports fded at the Waynes
boro Police Department, the
first came in on May 13 with
six more following through
May 17.
Edgewood Drive was hit
twice, with one victim report
ing theft from two vehicles, in
cluding $20 from an Explorer
and $50, a fuel pump and a
wooden Winchester ammo
box with shotgun shells from
a pickup truck. The value was
approximately $173. A second
victim reported three guns sto
len from his truck.
A Victory Drive woman re
ported that she noticed her car
and other vehicles on the prop
erty had been gone through
when she saw a check she’d
had in her car lying on the
ground. She said $25 cash had
been taken from her wallet.
On Fourth Street, $1 was
stolen from a Nissan Altima
while over on 11th Street a
man reported a dock 26 Gen4
and Retro 5 Jordans (all valued
around $759) had been swiped
from his Mercedes Benz.
Residents on both Dogwood
Drive and Greenbriar Lane
reported their vehicles had
been ransacked but nothing
appeared to be missing.
“I encourage our citizens
to turn on outside lighting at
night, to ensure their vehicles
are locked and all valuables
are out of sight, preferably
locked in the trunk or taken
in the home, and to report any
suspicious noises, persons or
other activity in the area to the
Waynesboro Police Depart
ment,” WPD Patrol Command
er Gary Jones said. “I further
encourage our citizens to help
us by being additional eyes
and ears in the community.
Together we can accomplish
more.”
No suspects have been iden
tified in the cases, and officers
continue to patrol the area.

NRC schedules virtual meeting to discuss
2019 safety performance of Plant Vogtle
Nuclear Regulatory Com
mission staff will discuss the
2019 safety performance of
the two operating units at the
Vogtle nuclear power plant as
well as the two units under
construction at the site during
a virtual meeting scheduled for
May 20.
The two operating units
began operation in 1987 and
1989, and the two units under
construction received com
bined operating licenses in
2012.
The session is scheduled
for 4:30 p.m., with NRC em
ployees responsible for plant
inspections participating, in
cluding the operating and con
struction resident inspectors.
The meeting will be accessible
via Skype. For individuals
without access to Skype, the
telephone conference number
is 301-415-0333, passcode is
68905#.
The NRC Reactor Oversight
Process and the Construction
Reactor Oversight Process,
both requiring thousands of
hours of inspection each year,
use color-coded inspection
findings and indicators to mea
sure plant performance. The
colors start at green and in
crease to white, yellow or red,
commensurate with the safety
significance of the issues in
volved. Inspection findings or
performance indicators with
more than very low safety
significance trigger increased
NRC oversight.
Inspections for the operat
ing units and the construction
units are performed by separate
NRC resident inspectors and
other inspection specialists
from the NRC Region II office
in Atlanta.
The NRC determined that
the Vogtle operating units oper
ated safely during 2019, but in
March 2020, the NRC issued
the final significance determi
nation of a white finding and
notice of violation involving a
failure to adequately calibrate
some containment radiation
monitors. The failure would
have resulted in overly con
servative emergency declara
tions during certain accident
scenarios. The NRC staff deter
mined that Vogtle Units 1 and
2 are under increased oversight
(retroactive to the third quarter
of 2019) and will remain under
increased oversight until the
NRC completes a supplemen
tal inspection to provide as
surance that corrective actions
address the causes and prevent
recurrence. That inspection has
not yet been scheduled.
The NRC found that Vogtle
Units 3 and 4 are being built in
a safe manner, and those units
will remain under the NRC’s
normal level of oversight for
plants under construction.
The annual assessment let
ters for Vogtle 1 & 2 (the
operating units) and Vogtle 3
& 4 (the units under construc
tion), which include upcoming
inspection plans, are available
on the NRC website. Current
performance information for
all units are also available and
updated updated on a quarterly
basis.
