Georgia has
140 dairy farms,
and 13 of those are
right here in Burke
County. County Ex
tension Agent Peyton
Sapp describes them as
very diverse.
“We have one of the larger
operations, milking 3,000 head
of cows, as well as a number of
smaller ones that milk a couple
hundred head,” he says. “The
various management styles are
also represented here. We have
grazing dairies that maintain
their cattle on pasture, those
that house their cattle inside
and hybrid dairies that have
some combination of manage
ment. The one thing they all
have in common is that they
have to pay particular attention
to the diet and health of the
milk cow. She is their ‘bread
and butter’ and if they expect
her to work for them produc
ing milk, then she has to be
properly cared for.”

A second Waynesboro Police
officer has been recognized for
saving the life of an infant.
It all happened when Officer
Erreka Bennett responded
to a call about a runaway
child on April 13; in a matter
of minutes, a mother stood
before her with a baby who was
struggling to breathe.
Bennett says her training
immediately took over, and she
began administering first aid to
the infant until EMA arrived on
the scene.
Following the incident,
Bennett was recognized with
a Letter of Commendation
from WPD Police Chief James
“Willie” Burley. “It gives me
great pride knowing your
dedication and commitment
to duty,” the letter concluded.
Bennett says she wants to be
a light for her community while
serving its citizens.
According to WPD Officer
Gary Jenkins, the infant is
“doing great.”
He went on to say that WPD
officers are cross-trained to
assist with basic CPR that could
potentially prolong someone's
life until medical professionals
are able to take over.
