Helping the homeless
The Waynesboro Homeless Task Force, founded in October of 2019 under the leadership of
Waynesboro Mayor Greg Carswell, has been busy distributing food and clothing. According
to task force chair Lottie Higgins, since its inception, the task force has had several people
and places join the effort of helping others. The first food giveaway was in November of 2019,
where nearly 200 homeless and hungry were fed through partnership with Burke Perk and
community donations. In December, a food, clothing and toy drive was held, and in January,
a Point In Time (PIT) count was done so the group may have an accurate account of the
people it’s trying to help (so far, there are 26 adults and six children counted as unsheltered).
Canned food drives, meal delivery services and clothing distributions continue across the
county thanks to Golden Harvest Food Bank, the Conference of Hope, individual citizens and
task force members. Pictured are members distributing food and clothes at Thankful Mission
ary Baptist Church recently.
