Children in Burke County will soon have a brand new playground thanks to a joint project requested by the Burke
County Library and Burke County Recreation Department. The Board of Commissioners approved the project
several months ago, and installation began last week. The $77,079.89 playground is equipped with interactive
climbing elements, slides, a swing set, a ten spin and a maypole spinner. There are also benches and a table.
Situated between the library and Citizens Park Gym, the new playground should be open for use soon as con
struction is being finished up this week.
Burke public schools push back start date

The start date for public
schools in Burke County
has been pushed back for a
second time.
In a press release issued on
July 30, Burke County Public
Schools Public Information
Officer Amy Nunnally
announced that the board
had voted to delay opening
schools until Tuesday, Sept. 8.
“After reviewing guidance
and current data regarding
COVID-19 from both state
and local health agencies, the
district believes this decision
is in the best interest of
the health and safety of all
students and staff,” the release
said, adding a thanks for
patience and understanding
as school leaders continue
to prepare for a safe and
educational school year.
Teachers returned to their
classrooms for pre-planning
last week, and in conjunction
with their normal duties, have
been busy organizing virtual
classrooms to accommodate
the hybrid schedule that will
start off the school year as
well as for those families who
opted for complete distance
learning. Nunnally said school
officials and staff have been
working tirelessly to make the
best educational decisions for
its 4,267 students.
Since the school year
has been postponed, the
school system will continue
delivering meals to students
throughout the month of
August on the same schedule
it has operated since the
pandemic shut schools down.
Private schools in Burke
County will open their doors
beginning next week, but not
without their own COVID-19
plans that encourage masks,
eliminate visitors inside the
school buildings and prepare
students and teachers for
distance learning should
it once again become a
reality. Both Edmund Burke
Academy and Faith Christian
Academy will begin school
with five-day, in-person
instruction on Monday, Aug.
10. See page 13 for back-to-
school information and letters
from EBA Headmaster Adam
Brett and FC A Principal Amy
Grubb.
The Waynesboro
Mennonite School is set to
open Thursday, Aug. 13, with
82 students currently enrolled.
“We are looking forward to
the wonderful opportunities
of a new school term,” said
Principal Kendall Myers.
“We seek God’s blessing,
protection and guidance as
we move forward into the new
school year.”

Graduation ceremonies
have now come and gone
for local schools’ Class of
2020, but not without dozens
of students who worked
hard and excelled through
a very different second half
of senior year. With Burke
County High School holding
its commencement recently,
we received the final list
of scholarship recipients
and special awards for local
students; below you will find
the winners from BCHS,
Edmund Burke Academy
and Faith Christian Academy.
These students did not get to
have the annual honors day
hosted by their respective
schools, and we wanted to
applaud their efforts and
wish them the best of luck
in the future. Thank the
various businesses, civic
groups and individuals who
provide thousands of dollars
in scholarships year after year.
