Community coping with COVID

As the COVID-19
pandemic continues to impact
the local community, a local
business and school have
decided to temporarily close
their doors.
On Friday, Edmund Burke
Academy announced to
parents that the school would
switch to virtual learning for
the next two weeks to allow
faculty, staff and students
affected by the virus to rest
and heal. The private school
opened for the annual term
back in August and is nearing
completion of its first nine
weeks, but Headmaster Adam
Brett said he felt it was in the
school’s best interest to take
a pause. “We need everyone
healthy as we continue to
fight this and educate our
students,” Brett said, adding
that it’s important for the
school family to remember
this is only temporary. “We
will resume face-to-face
instruction on Oct. 12. In
the meantime, we ask for
prayers for our school and the
health of our faculty, staff and
students.”
While several other schools
across the CSRA have also
temporarily switched to
virtual learning, Burke County
Public Schools announced
this week that they will be
returning for more face-to-
face instruction in October.

At the end of the day,
students, covered in rainbow
colors, celebrated another
successful fundraiser —
one that brought more than
$11,000 to Faith Christian
Academy.
The school’s annual Pecan
Color Classic (a 1.5-mile
color run held on campus)
saw 80 runners this year as the
Eagles family came together
to raise funds again. This
year, according to principal
Amy Grubb, the school did
not focus on a particular area
of need as “there are so many
extra expenses right now with
COVID.”
In past years, the Classic
helped garner funds for a
school library and the
replacement of tiles in various
classrooms.
Winners in the boys race
included Andrew Stewart,
first place; Dennis Eberly,
second; and Ray Walling,
third. For the girls, Violet
Landis finished first while
Laura Walling and Natalie
Almy rounded out the top
three.
“We are so thankful for
all the runners, volunteers
and sponsors for making
this a very successful event,
Grubb said,

Music Fest slated for Saturday

It’s all going down Saturday
night: music, dancing and
a chance to win $20,000 in
cash.
After months of planning
and ultimately rescheduling
in the midst of the COVID-19
pandemic, the Waynesboro
Exchange Club’s annual
Music Fest is just a few short
days away.
Gates open on Saturday,
Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. and local
favorite, The Hushpuppies
Band, will start things off on
stage at 7 p.m. followed by
the Swingin’ Medallions.
“These guys have been
practicing so hard,” Exchange
Club President Art Lively said
of the Hushpuppies, who are
well known throughout the
area. “Not only are they
friends of mine, but they
are talented musicians who
always put on a great show.
We can’t wait to see them
and the Swingin’ Medallions
perform some fun beach
music that will help brighten
up a year that has been
difficult for many.”
Music Fest, which is
dedicated in memory of Mutt
Kennedy of McKinney's Pond
who recently passed away,
is also the Exchange Club’s
flagship fundraiser this year
following the cancellation of
the organization’s beloved
fair. The monies raised will
be used to support various
events the club participates in
throughout the year, especially
its scholarship program which
offers thousands of dollars to
area seniors as they graduate
from high school.
One lucky winner, who will
be announced on Saturday
evening, will walk away from
the concert $20,020 richer.
Tickets for the cash raffle are
still available for $100 each
and are available from club
members.
“Bring your chairs and
coolers and join us for a night
to remember,” Lively said,
adding that tickets are $20 in
advance on etix.com and $25
at the gate. Parking passes are
also available for purchase.
