Just a few days remain for
local students to scare us into

Fundraiser brings in largest
total ever despite pandemic

In just a few hours, the
Downtown Organization of
Retailers’ (DOOR) Celebrity
Waiter Night brought in more
than $13,500. In fact, Thurs
day’s event, which was held
for the first time in three years
and during a pandemic, was a
total record breaker.
“This event really is one of
my favorites,” said DOOR
co-chair Nan Palmer Lynch.
“I love seeing people support
and ‘fight’ for something that
benefits our town so much.”
And fight they did — for
the biggest tip and the most
tickets sold.
The duo of Elizabeth Billips
and Julie Cates won in both
categories, selling 70 of the
102 total tickets purchased
for Good Day Cafe alone, and
fuming in a whopping $4,000
in tips from their patrons. Their
biggest cash tip totaled $ 1,200.
Another 165 tickets were sold
at Burke Perk, and the most tip
money collected for that venue
was by the Best Office team
of Robin Baxley and Maianna
Bailey, who garnered $2,405.
Their biggest single tip was
for $600.
In all, tips for the evening
amounted to $12,324.37 with
every dollar promised to go
right back into the community
in the shape of future events.
Another approximate $1,200
was raised through T-shirt
sales.
Other waiter teams included
Dominee Thomas and Dylan
Thomas, $2,082; Bo Blanchard
and Britt Marchman, $1,825;
and Cynthia Mann and Neely
Mann, $1,469. Bartenders
were Denise and Tracy Quick,
Kim and Jerry Arrington, John
Keller and Brad Lynch. Radeta
Smith and Barbara Newsome
also waited tables; and Ash
ley Roberts and Diana Royal
served as hostesses.
Lynch and her co-chair, Lind
sey Beazley Keller, put in the
man hours behind the scenes
to make the “MASK”erade-
themed dinner happen.
“It’s so good to see the com
munity come together and
support something that they
see has value,” Lynch said.
“DOOR was created to foster
community spirit, and there
is no better example than the
other night, especially given
the circumstances and the year
we’ve had.”
Asking the tough questions
True Citizen Publisher Roy F. Chalker Jr. fires off the questions during a candidates forum held
last week in partnership with the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. Chalker served as
moderator of the event, which was attended by several candidates for local and state races,
and topics of discussion included everything from trash pickup to citizens arrest. To view the
video, visit the Chamber’s YouTube channel.
