10 YEARS AGO-OCTOBER 27,2010
Arecreation department coach and former Bears quarterback,
Verdre Lamont Scott, was killed when a gunman opened fire
at Club Paradise. Officers believed Scott was an innocent
bystander and was the victim of a bght between two groups
shooting at each other.
Congressman John Barrow was honored in a ceremony at
Purification Cellutions for his efforts to aid industry. The award
was sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers.
In the most important match of the regular season, the
Burke County Bears came from behind to defeat Washington
County 28-21.
25 YEARS AGO-NOVEMBER 2,1995
U.S. District Court Judge Anthony A. Alaimo ruled that
the Waynesboro mayor’s race could be decided by a plurality
instead of a majority, as long as the leading candidate had at
least 37 percent of the vote. The candidates included William
Patterson, Mary Hargrove, Martin Dolin and James D. Smith.
A body found in a wooded area off Creek Road by a timber
crew was identified as Jeremy Emile Edwards of Richmond
County. The 15 year-old Butler High School student had been
missing since August 14.
Sheriff Greg Coursey said there had been 42 traffic incidents
involving deer in the county since October 1.
50 YEARS AGO-OCTOBER 28,1970
The Burke County Grand Jury appointed George Holloway
of Midville to replace Charles Perry who was serving an
interim term.
Donnie Jo Mallard was named as Edmund Burke Academy’s
first homecoming queen. A junior at the school, she was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Mallard.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Hal Suit, an Atlanta
television newsman, met with local supporters here prior to
the November 3 General election.
75 YEARS AGO-NOVEMBER 1,1945
Henry Manau, publisher of The True Citizen, announced
that the newspaper had been sold To Roy F. Chalker. Chalker
thanked Manau “for keeping The True Citizen until I
completed my four year term in the Navy.” He also pledged
“every effort to expand the services of the paper to its readers
and advertisers.”
F.L. McKinney announced the opening of McKinney
Wholesale Grocery Company at Railroad Ave. and Seventh
Street.
The Ploeger-Abbott company announced it would begin
canning sweet potatoes in the fall. The company said it
expected to put up 30,000 to 40,000 cases before the end of
the year.
