Royal
and realized others prepared
and longed for the day that
they’d get their wings follow
ing a battle with illness or sim
ply due to old age. I struggled
with the common shoulda,
coulda, wouldas, but I never
had a hard time accepting the
realities of those deaths.
With my dear friend Aman
da, it’s been an entirely differ
ent story. Maybe it’s because
I’m older now and understand
the value of a true friend or
maybe it’s social media and
technology and thinking she’s
there behind a screen of some
sort ready with some advice
or a funny video to make me
laugh. Sadly, we don’t spend
face to face time with folks
like we use to; we rely more
on text messages and Facebook
to keep in touch. That, too, can
skew a reality we don’t want
to accept. Where Amanda is
concerned, however, I believe
it runs deeper than any of
us simply refusing to accept
that she’s gone. If you knew
her, even if just in passing,
you know that she was truly
a person who fit the “one of a
kind” mold. She was light; she
made a mark on the world, and
even though she’s no longer
here, that mark is multiplying.
This doesn’t feel real because
there’s more to it, and those of
us who’ve thought maybe we
aren’t accepting are just part of
the next step. She’s not stopped
living because she stopped
breathing; we who are left here
remembering her are keeping
her alive. For the first time, I
Continued from 4A
understand what it means for a
spirit to live on in the hearts of
others. Because of the life that
she lived, others will continu
ously be affected by the hearts
Amanda impacted and changed
for the better.
Just before Amanda’s death,
she took a picture of a rainbow
that, like the leaf I mentioned
earlier, seemed to come out of
nowhere. It hadn’t rained, yet
that rainbow popped up just
after the passing of one of her
patients. She wrote, “I don’t
know exactly what it meant;
I just knew it felt significant
in some way ... special some
how.” In the weeks that fol
lowed her own passing, friends
and family of Amanda shared
rainbow spottings with one
another, amazed not just by
the image itself (full rainbows,
double rainbows, so vibrant in
color) but also by the frequency
in which they occurred.
Driving home on Sunday
morning, lost in thoughts about
my friend, a single,brown leaf
fluttered down. It happened so
fast I didn’t react as I have in
the past. I actually smiled and
felt a peace come over me. And
I remembered that poem.
“I have just missed a big wet
leaf/ struggling ... to lift itself
into the wind and live.”
I don’t know what that mo
ment meant exactly, but I
know it was significant, special
somehow, a reminder that even
when severed from its tree, a
leaf carries on, adjusting to its
new life and enjoying the ride.
