DDA cancels Christmas parade
DIANA ROYAL
jdianaroyal@gmail.com
One annual holiday tradition
will not take place this year
as the City of Waynesboro’s
Downtown Development Au
thority has decided to cancel
the Christmas parade.
Usual participants of the
event, which was scheduled for
Dec. 12, showed little interest
according to DDA Director
Don Lively. Paired with fluc
tuating numbers of COVID-19
cases, the board decided it best
to cancel.
“I sent out a letter with a
request for applications over
a month ago,” Lively said,
adding that only a handful of
groups and individuals had
responded. “I’m not sure if
people are worried about being
too close together on floats or
just nervous about things in
general, but with no one par
ticipating, we wouldn’t have a
very good parade. Usually by
this time, we have a full line
up of civic, church and school
groups along with floats, horses
and other individuals. Hope
fully next year, we can bring
our parade back, and it will be
bigger and better than ever.”
While COVID concerns
were present, Lively said the
DDA had specific guidelines
and social distancing plans
in order to be able to hold the
parade. The largest factor in
the group’s decision to cancel
was, he said, due to the lack of
response.

Runoff for Senate races could flip the chamber veterans day at eba
DIANA ROYAL

The nation continues to fo
cus on the state of Georgia as
voters here could significantly
change things in Washington
D.C.
Democrats already flipped
the state blue (for the first time
since 1992) when they voted
to elect Joe Biden as the 46th
president of the United States;
now, Georgians will head back
to the polls in January to elect
two senators, and if Demo
crats win those seats, they’ll
assume control of the Senate
chamber. They already control
the House.
On the ballot for the runoffs
will be incumbent Republican
Sen. David Perdue and his
Democrat challenger Jon Os-
soff as well as incumbent Sen.
Kelly Loeffler (a Republican)
and Democrat Raphael War-
nock. Loeffler was appointed
last year by Georgia’s Republi
can Gov. Brian Kemp to fill the
seat of Johnny Isakson.
In Burke County, Purdue
was the pick, garnering 5,406
votes to Ossoff’s 4,986. Athird
candidate, Libertarian Shane
Hazel, had 164.
Loeffler was around 100
votes shy of being the local
choice. On a ballot contain
ing 20 candidates, she gar
nered 3,018 votes to Warnock’s
3,157. Republican Doug Col
lins pulled 1,916.
On the state level, Perdue
had 49.74 percent of the vote;
Burke County Animal Hospital
receives grant to spay and neuter
DIANA ROYAL
jdianaroyal@gmail.com
The Burke County Animal
Hospital recently received a
grant that enables the facility
to spay or neuter pitbulls and
pitbull mixes for free.
According to Dr. Sarah Ford,
the grant was provided by the
Georgia Veterinary Medical
Association and requires no
payments from the pet owners.
The procedure is by appoint
ment only, and the required
rabies shot will also be given
for free to the dogs participat
ing in the program if they are
not already vaccinated.
“We are so excited for the
residents of Burke County to
be able to participate in this
program,” she went on to say.
“Pitbulls and pitbull mixes
have historically been our most
common rescue breed, but they
are the hardest breed to place
in homes. We are hoping that
with this program we will be
able to stop some of the over
population problems in Burke
County.”

Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning
Centers (21st CCLC) Return to Burke County
Advisory Council Members Needed
The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st
CCLC) program provides federal funding for the establishment of
community learning centers that provide, during non-school hours or
periods when school is not in session, such as before and after school
or during summer recess, academic, artistic and cultural enrichment
opportunities for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty
and low-performing schools, in order to meet state and local standards
in core academic subjects such as reading, math and science.
This program also offers students a broad array of activities and
includes families and the community in the educational process. Two
of these programs are established in the Burke County School District;
one is at Burke County Middle School and the other one is at Blakeney
Elementary School.
To better serve the community, we are in the process of organizing our
2020-2021 Advisory Council. The purpose of the Advisory Council is
to monitor program progress, determine areas of need, and provide
resources to the program. All parents, stakeholders and community
members are invited to join the Advisory Council. If you are interested,
