Rebels no match
for Burke County
BEN ROBERTS

After a tough loss two weeks
ago to the Thomson Bulldogs,
the Burke County Bears needed
to bounce back against Hephzi-
bah this past Friday night at Big
John McLeod Stadium.
They did just that, racking up
over five hundred yards of total
offense on their way to a 62-28
win over the Rebels.
The win moves the Bears to
3-1 in Region 4-AAA play and
they maintain third place two
weeks before facing first-place
Richmond Academy.
“We bounced back,” head
coach Eric Parker agreed. “Es
pecially offensively and that
was great because we needed it.
I thought the kids played pretty
consistent. We got off to a much
better start.”
That better start included
a touchdown in the first two
minutes on Burke County’s first
drive when sophomore running
back Charlie Dorsey scored on
an 8-yard carry.
The Bears would score on 6
of their 7 possessions in the first
half to go into halftime leading
42-21.
The Rebels also fell prey
to the Bears’ most productive
passing game yet. Sophomore
quarterback Marshall Flowers
was 14 of 19 passes for 238
yards and three touchdowns to
three different receivers on the
night. Fie was replaced for one
series by fellow sophomore
Kohen Rogers, who went 2 for
2 with 43 yards and a touch
down pass of his own.
Parker was pleased with his
offense’s output thru the air
and believes that experience
will help moving forward this
season.
“We were able to take advan
tage of the fact that they put a
lot of people in the box to take
away our run. The quarterbacks
and the receivers did a good job
on our play action stuff where
we were able to slide behind
the defensive backs and then
they connected. That helped us
out a lot and is certainly going
to help us out in the future,”
he said.
Burke County’s defense
continued to do its job, hold
ing Flephzibah to three scores
and 461 yards of total offense.
One of those touchdowns was
a pass and run of 59-yards in
the second quarter.
“The concern going into
Flephzibah was the style of
game they play, throwing a lot
of balls out and you having to
tackle him in space,” Parker
said. “We didn’t do a good job
of that some of the time, but
we got off the held when we
needed to.”
Parker was disappointed his
special teams gave up another
touchdown on a kickoff return
for 60 yards but admitted his
kicking team had a busy night.
“We went down and covered
ten kicks, which is about like
running ten 60- or 70-yard
sprints,” Parker defended. “A
lot of these kids are turning
around and having to play
offense and defense. I think
we’ve probably got to be able
to get some more kids in there
to substitute those that are go
ing both ways. But it’s a good
night when you’ve got to cover
10 kicks.”
The Bears will face the
fourth-place Morgan County
Bulldogs at the Bear Den this
Friday, Nov. 13, for Senior
Night. Kickoff is set for 7:30
p.m.
This will mark the first time
these two teams have met.
“They’re well coached.
They’ve got some decent size
Sophomore Franklin Jordan on the carry for the Bears.
and some decent athletes,”
Parker said of Morgan County.
“We’re just going to have to
step in and play. They’d rather
run the ball than throw it. In
the past that’s been a little bet
ter for us.”
“They’re a little bit up and
down, like several other teams
in our region, including our
selves,” he added.

The Spartans (3-6, 0-1)
went down by a touchdown
on Homecoming night, losing
20-14 to Thomas Jefferson
Academy.
The game started off in Ed
mund Burke’s favor when, in
the first quarter, Carson Woods
ran the ball into the end zone
for the only touchdown of the
first half.
In the third quarter, the Spar
tans lit the board up again with
a 20-yard pass from Eason Wa
ters to Evan Hirschauer. Fol
lowing the touchdown, Waters
hopped into the end zone with
a 2-point conversion. The Jag
uars also scored a touchdown,
but at the end of the quarter, the
Spartans were up 14-6.
Thomas Jefferson turned
things up in the final quarter,
adding 2 more touchdowns and
a 2-point conversion to seal the
20-14 victory.
The Spartans had a total of
301 yards for the night, 256
rushing and 45 in the air.
Woods rushed 13 times for
115 while Waters had 100
yards on 17 carries. Defen
sively, Waters led the pack with
17 touchdowns. Brantley Jones

Hirschauer, 10.
During halftime, senior Clau

Guns win five in a row

Local first responders got
the support of more than 100
citizens to join in the battle
of saving lives. This time,
they all stood together, rolled
up their sleeves and donated
blood.
Though the teams were
deadlocked during Waynes
boro’s Guns & Hoses Blood
Battle, at 33 donors each,
a strong showing in Sardis
was just enough to crown law
enforcement as the winners of
the fifth annual event.
According to Jacqueline
Clemmons, recruitment spe
cialist at Shepeard Commu
nity Blood Center, the drive
brought in a grand total of
107 attempted donations, just
two shy of last year’s contest.
While the teams were tied
in Waynesboro, the Guns
drew 18 donors in Sardis,
and the Hoses had 4. At A&A
Minit Mart, the Guns had 9
while the Hoses picked up
8. Clemmons also said two
donors did not pick a team
when they filled out their
paperwork.
“At the end of the day,
everyone wins because we
are truly saving lives,” Clem
mons said. “The law en
forcement, firefighters and
EMA staff in Burke County
go above and beyond their
call of duty for this event
every year. They are such
good sports and really help
bring in the crowd. We are
so thankful for everyone who
took the time to donate.”
Participants in the event
included the Waynesboro
Police Department, Burke
County Sheriff’s Office,
Burke County Emergency
Management Agency and
the Sardis Police Depart
ment. Queensborough Bank
was also a co-sponsor as it
has been since the drive’s
inception. Awards will be
presented at a later date.
