Public Service Commission runoff moved to Jan. 5
DIANA ROYAL
jdianaroyal@gmail.com
Last week, Georgia Secre
tary of State Brad Raffensperg-
er announced he was moving
the Public Service Commission
runoff from Dec. 1 to Jan. 5 to
coincide with the state’s two
high profile Senate runoffs.
Republican incumbent Lau
ren “Bubba” McDonald Jr.
was approximately 4,000 votes
shy of the state’s required 50
percent plus one vote needed
to win. While he had garnered
49.89 percent of the vote, his
opponent, Democrat Daniel
Blackman had 46.98 percent.
Raffensperger announced
in a press conference Nov. 11
that the recount of the presi
dential election and the quick
succession of multiple runoffs
as originally planned was an
“untenable situation” for elec
tion workers. “With that, under
my powers under the health
emergency, I am moving the
date of the Dec. 1 election to
coincide with the federal runoff
on Jan. 5,” he said. “This will
protect the integrity of both
elections and make for better
election administration. It has
the added benefit of saving
taxpayers millions of dollars.”
Early voting for the runoff
will begin Dec. 14.
Citizens can still register to
vote and did not have to par
ticipate in the general election
in order to cast a ballot for the
runoff. Thousands of young
voters, who were not yet 18 and
couldn’t vote in the November
general election, may now reg
ister to participate.
Registration is available
online at georgia.gov/register-
to-vote, in-person at the local
board of elections office, lo
cated on the first floor of the
historic courthouse in Waynes
boro, or at any state agen
cies that provide food stamps,
Medicaid and mental health
services, military recruiting
centers and public libraries.
To register, you must be a
citizen of the United States, a
legal resident of the county and
at least 17 1/2 years old to reg
ister and 18 years old to vote
and must not be serving a sen
tence for conviction of a felony
involving moral turpitude and
not have been found mentally
incompetent by a judge.

Gina Richardson, County
Nurse Manager at the B. Lamar
Murray Public Health Center,
urged local citizens to follow
the guidelines for wearing
masks provided by the Cen
ters for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC).
The agency issued the fol
lowing guidance this week:
“SARS-CoV-2 (the virus
that causes COVID-19) is
transmitted predominately by
respiratory droplets generated
when people cough, sneeze,
sing, talk, or breathe. CDC
recommends community use of
masks, specific ally non-valved
multi-layer cloth masks, to
prevent transmission of SARS-
CoV-2. Experimental and epi
demiological data support
community masking to reduce
the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
“Masks are primarily intend
ed as ‘source control’ to reduce
the emission of virus-laden
droplets. This is especially
relevant for asymptomatic or
presymptomatic individuals
who feel well and may be
unaware they are infectious.
These cases are estimated to
account for more than 50%
of transmissions. Masks also
help provide personal protec
tion for the wearer by reduc
ing the likelihood of inhaling
infectious droplets. The com
munity benefit of masking for
SARS-CoV-2 control is due to
the combination of these ef
fects. As the number of people
using masks consistently and
correctly increases, so does the
individual prevention benefit.”

This week, the Georgia
Department of Health reported
a total of 391,466 cases across
the state, including 8,496 deaths
and 33,439 hospitalizations (as
of approximately 3 p.m. on
Tuesday). That’s an increase
of 15,412 positive cases, 232
deaths and 808 hospitalizations
in one week. Locally, Burke
County has reached a total
of 958 confirmed positives,
up 31 from last Tuesday. No
new local deaths have been
reported; that number remains
at 10 and the numbers of total
hospitalizations also remains
the same at 92.
Currently, Burke County
has a positivity rate of 26.2
percent; this number reflects
the number of positive cases
out of those tested, not of the
total county’s population.
