Voter registration deadline approaching
DIANA ROYAL

The deadline to register to
vote in the upcoming runoff
election is quickly approach
ing.
Citizens across the state of
Georgia have until Monday,
Dec. 7 to do so. In-person
registration is available at
the Burke County Board of
Elections Office, located on
the first floor of the historic
courthouse in Waynesboro,
Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. Any state agencies that
provide food stamps, Medicaid
and mental health services,
military recruiting centers and
public libraries also offer voter
registration.
Registration is available
online at georgia.gov/register-
to-vote.
Citizens did not have to par
ticipate in the general election
in order to cast a ballot for the
runoff, which will determine
three outcomes: the two high
profile Senate races of incum
bent Republican Sen. David
Perdue and his Democrat chal
lenger Jon Ossoff and incum
bent Sen. Kelly Loeffler (a
Republican) and Democrat Ra
phael Warnock as well as a bid
for Public Service Commission
from Republican incumbent
Lauren “Bubba” McDonald
Jr. and his opponent, Democrat
Daniel Blackman.
Georgia Secretary of State
Brad Raffensperger recently
announced he was moving
the Public Service Commis
sion runoff to coincide with
the Senate runoffs, stating the
recount of the presidential elec
tion and the quick succession
of multiple runoffs as original
ly planned was an “untenable
situation” for election workers.
“This will protect the integrity
of both elections and make for
better election administration.
It has the added benefit of
saving taxpayers millions of
dollars,” he said.
The runoff will take place
Jan. 5, and early voting begins
Dec. 14.
Since the general election,
there have been 361 newly reg
istered voters in Burke County,
bringing the total number of
voters up to 16,917.
To register, a person must be
a citizen of the United States,
a legal resident of the county
and at least 17 1/2 years old (18
years old to vote) and must not
be serving a sentence for con
viction of a felony involving
moral turpitude and not have
been found mentally incompe
tent by a judge.
Jackson says system will be upgraded
Burke County Tax Commis
sioner Marian Jackson said
this week that her office, in
partnership with the Georgia
Department of Revenue, will
upgrade its Georgia DRIVES
Motor Vehicles System.
The Georgia Department of
Revenue (DOR) is upgrading
to a new version of the Georgia
Driver Record and Integrated
Vehicle Enterprise System
(DRIVES). “This upgrade will
keep us up-to-date with the lat
est technology advances and
will ensure we have access to
the most recent enhancements
and features of the software,”
Jackson said.
She added that, “implemen
tation of the upgrade will
require the vehicle registra
tions and titling services, in
cluding e-Services and tag
renewal kiosks, to be unavail
able Wednesday, January 13
through Monday, January 18.
Vehicle owners with renewal
dates in January are encour
aged to do so prior to January
13 to avoid delays.”
What to Expect: Wednesday,
January 13,2021:
• The county tag office and
the Motor Vehicle Division
will not be able to process
transactions.
• All online motor vehicle re
lated services including online
tag renewal services will be of
fline January 13 - January 18.
• Motor Vehicle Self Service
Kiosks will be offline January
13 - January 18.
• During the week of Janu
ary 19-22, walk-in customers
may experience delays and
longer than normal wait times.
To avoid such delays, Georgia
residents with January and
February renewal dates are
encouraged to renew prior to
Wednesday, January 13.
• Customers and dealers
seeking to conduct any title
transactions should complete
their business
at a county tag office prior to
Wednesday, January 13.
• Dealers will be able to
initiate electronic title and
registration (ETR) transactions
and issue temporary operating
permits (TOPs) over MLK Day
weekend.
• Law enforcement will still
have access to motor vehicle
records through a statewide
backup hie.
