Saturday kicked off basket
ball season in the Bear Den,
and Burke County’s varsity
boys started off with a bang as
they defeated Jefferson County
71-47.
“This is a new season, and
the kids played well for the
first game,” said Bears head
coach Purvis Dukes. “Coach
Farmer at Jefferson does a
good job, and he was missing
some of his guys to football.
I think we played especially
well on the defensive end of
the floor on Saturday. The
guys played together and that's
the making of a solid team.
The crowd that came out on
Saturday was excited and that
made for a good atmosphere,
especially in these times. We
are going to continue working
and trying to improve each
game.”
Dukes said the team is really
looking to its seniors to lead
them on the court this season
as this group of young men
has played in an elite 8 game
as well as a sweet 16 showing
last season.
On the night, Dalyn Proc
tor and Bobby Little led on
the scoreboard with 20 and
14 points, respectively, while
Kobe Brown and Tykevian
Hiers had 8 rebounds each.
Leading in assists were Latrell
Rainey, Dantavian Allen And
Brown, with 3 each. James
Mable had 5 blocks, and Little
and Allen had 3 each. Little
also had 7 steals for the night.
Requests for stats from the
Lady Bears game had not been
answered as of press time.
Both teams played at home
against Washington County
Tuesday night but results were
not available at press time.
Up next, Burke County will
host North Augusta on Dec. 11
beginning with the girls game
at 7 p.m. and the boys game im
mediately following. On Sat
urday, Dec. 12, they play host
again to Jefferson County and
to Jenkins County on Tuesday,
Dec. 15. Both nights will begin
with girls games at 6 p.m.

They took down two teams
their first week on the court.
The Lady Spartans defeated
Curtis Baptist 49-43 on Tues
day and Lincoln County 61-22
on Thursday to start off their
basketball season.
Head coach Daniel Hannah
said the girls played fairly well
against a scrappy Curtis team
but saw some areas that need
work. “We've got to really
improve our ball handling and
running the floor properly in
transition,” he said, “but we've
got a chance to be pretty sporty
if we do the little things well.”
Marlee Mobley led the of
fensive effort with 13 points,
while Malana Williams and
Morgan Clark each put up
12. Clark pulled down 10
rebounds; Williams had 5 re
bounds, 4 assists and 4 steals;
and Mobley had 2 rebounds
and 3 steals. Zaylie Baker also
had 3 steals.
Against Lincoln County,
Hannah said the Lady Spartans
ran the floor well and that Wil
liams did a great job getting
them in the right spots and set
ting them up to be successful.
“Everyone got some court time
and hopefully got a little bit
more comfortable playing in
different roles,” he said. “Still
looking for us to continue to
improve our ball handling and
moving our feet on defense.”
Williams was the front run
ner with 22 points, including
2 three-pointers, and Baker
had 12 points and was 100
percent from the three-point
line, sinking a total of 4. Clark
had 9 rebounds and 7 steals,
and Kelsey Jaquess had 5 re
bounds and 3 steals. Williams
also contributed 3 steals.
The boys joined the girls on
the road Tuesday for games
against David Emanuel Acad
emy, but results were not avail
able at press time. Edmund
Burke will host Westminster
this Thursday, Dec. 10, and
Faith Christian on Monday,
Dec. 14. The girls games begin
at 6 p.m. with the boys imme
diately following.
Kelsey Jaquess had 5 rebounds and 3 steals against Lincoln
County.
