Early voting off to good start

Burke Countians have taken
advantage of the opportunity to
early vote in the state’s runoff
election with nearly 600 citi
zens casting ballots in the first
two days.
According to Laverne Sello,
executive director for the Burke
County Board of Elections Of
fice, a total of 388 voted on
Monday, the first day of early
voting, and another 209 had
voted yesterday (Tuesday) just
before 2 p.m.
The two Senate races on
the ballot pit two Republican
incumbent senators against
strong Democratic challeng
ers: Sens. David Perdue and
Kelly Loeffler face opposition
from Jon Ossoff and Raphael
Wamock, respectively. Perdue
had roughly a 2 percent margin
over Ossoff in the November
election on the state level while
Wamock helf Loeffler to 25.91
percent while obtaining 32.90
himself.
Also on the ballot is a bid
for Public Service Commis
sion with incumbent Lauren
“Bubba” McDonald Jr. facing
Democrat Daniel Blackman.
The runoff will take place
on Jan. 5, from 7 a.m. to 7
p.m., with advanced in-person
voting continuing through
Dec. 31. Early voting is held
at the board of elections of
fice located on the first floor
of the historic courthouse in
Waynesboro, Monday-Lriday,
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will
be closed on Dec. 24-25 and
Jan. 1 to observe Christmas and
New Year holidays. There will
also be no Saturday voting in
the runoff. Voters did not have
to participate in the general
election in November in order
to vote in the mnoff.
On Jan. 5, voters will re
port to their normal precincts,
with the exception of North
Waynesboro. Due to an ongo
ing renovation project at the
Burke County Senior Center,
those who normally vote there
will vote at the Burke County
Office Park located at 715 W.
Sixth Street, Waynesboro. This
change is temporary because of
the constmction at the senior
center.

Want some advice about
scams? Stay calm. Con art
ists use that feeling of alarm
to trick victims into acting
before they can think. BBB
Scam Tracker is seeing reports
of a con that claims that your
Amazon, Paypal, or other ac
count has been compromised.
Scammers hope you’ll panic
and fall for their scheme.
The scam begins by you re
ceiving an email, call, or text
message informing you there’s
been suspicious activity in
your bank or another account,
such as Amazon, Netflix, or
PayPal. You need to take im
mediate action to prevent your
account from being further
compromised or to avoid be
ing charged for a fraudulent
purchase. Don’t fall for it!
The email version of this
con uses the company’s logo,
colors, and language to make
the message look just like
an official alert. A link in the
message leads to a website that
asks for your account number,
login and password infor
mation, or even your Social
Security number. If you share
this information, you could
become the victim of identity
theft and fraud.
In the phone version, the
caller claims to have noticed
an expensive charge, which
you didn’t make, on your ac
count. Some victims told BBB
Scam Tracker that the caller
pushed them to download
phony “security software” to
their phone or computer. This
is really malware, which gives
scammers access to sensitive
information, such as usernames
and passwords, stored on their
devices.
In other versions, the caller
insists you need to buy pre-paid
gift or debit cards in order to
reverse the fraudulent charges
and secure your account. One
victim told BBB Scam Track
er that they received a call
from the ’’Amazon verification
department.” After noticing
fraudulent purchases, Amazon
allegedly put a hold on their ac
count. In order to lift the hold,
the scam caller convinced the
victim “to buy $200 of Google
Play cards. This was needed
to use the codes to cancel the
orders. [The scammer] said I
needed to do it right away; the
account could only be on hold
for a short time.”
How to Avoid “Compro
mised Account” Scams:
Be extra cautious with un
solicited calls, emails, and
texts. Don’t be quick to believe
claims from unsolicited com
munications.
Understand how business
es handle communications.
If you know how disputes and
suspicious activity is handled,
it will be easier to spot a scam.

Plant Vogtle siren tests
begin December 17 th .
On Thursday, December 17 th , Plant Vogtle will
be conducting tests of the emergency notification
system. During this time, outdoor sirens will be
activated within the states of South Carolina and
Georgia, in the surrounding counties of Burke,
Allendale, Aiken and Barnwell.
Plant Vogtle has installed 48 new sirens throughout
the 10-mile radius around the plant as part of its
efforts to protect residents in the unlikely event of
an emergency at the plant. The new sirens will be
commissioned, or tested, in small groups beginning
the week of July 27 and continuing for the next
several months. Residents may hear brief sounds
coming from the new sirens as tests are being
conducted. These tests are coordinated with the
state and local emergency management agencies.
Georgia Power is committed to protecting your
health and safety. For emergency-preparedness
tips, visit georgiapower.com/nuclearenergy.
►
*lf there were a real emergency, sirens would
indicate a need to tune into local television or
radio for additional information.
