LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
Long time ago, you was born,
Born in a manger low,
Sweet little Jesus Boy.
The world treat you mean, Lord,
Treat me mean, too,
But that’s how things is down here —
We don’t know who You is.
What do the 1857 Dred Scott Supreme Court decision, a 1934
Christmas song, and the 2020 Georgia senate run-off have to do
with each other? They all have to do with valuing and protecting
life. "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," made famous by gospel singer
Mahalia Jackson in 1955, was written by Robert MacGimsey
and intentionally designed to reflect the experience of the histori
cally enslaved and oppressed African American population. The
personhood of these men and women and children, created in the
image of God, was denied at the highest level of our legal system
through the 1857 Dred Scott decision. The justices ruled that those
of African descent were not to be considered citizens and had no
standing to sue in court for protection. Thankfully this decision,
instead of being unthinkingly obeyed, was overturned by the 13th
and 14th amendments in the 1860s. However, in 2020 in America
we continue to view a large portion of the population in the same
way as the African American population was viewed historically
by many. Since 1973 when Roe v. Wade was decided, it has been
legal to kill unborn babies. Ironically, many who during campaign
season argue for social justice refuse to stand up for these most
helpless members of our society, members who cannot flee the
abortionists' tools or appeal to a higher authority for protection.
In Georgia in 2017, there were 36,330 abortions, enough to fill
404 school busses and more than the combined populations of
Burke, Jenkins, and Glascock counties. This is happening year
after year. From 1970 through 2017,47,275,639 have died in the
United States from abortion, making it the leading cause of death.
Two Georgia senate candidates have been proudly endorsed by
pro-abortion NARAL which wants to continue allowing this
injustice against our unborn brothers and sisters, whereas two
have been endorsed by pro-life organizations. When we go to
vote, let us consider the plight of these precious unborn people.
Being personally opposed to abortion, which disproportionately
impacts the African American community with nearly 60% of
abortions in Georgia occuring in that demographic, is insufficient.
Our community engagement and our votes must reflect our com
mitment to justice for these babies.
