Bears, Lady Bears end week with wins

Both the boys and girls var
sity teams for Burke County
went 2-1 last week on the
basketball court.
On Tuesday, Washington
County left the Bear Den as
victor in both contests, with
WACO’s girls winning 68-45
and the boys, 69-53. North
Augusta swept Burke County
on as well on Friday, with the
girls falling 55-34 and the
boys, 71-58. The Lady Bears
and Bears wrapped up the
weekend with a pair of wins
against Jefferson County; the
girls won 53-45, and the boys
took a close 48-41 win.
“We continue to get better
at every phase of the game,”
Lady Bears head coach Leslie
Lawrence, adding that right
now they are trying to find
some chemistry and put the
right lineups on the floor. “In
the Jefferson County game, we
were able to find a great combi
nation after being down by 13
early in the second quarter. Our
players fought and were able
to be successful in the contest.
In the Washington County and
North Augusta games, we were
not able to get in a rhythm and
it showed. We were able to cor
rect some of those errors in the
Jefferson County game. Those
were two very good teams
who will play deep into the
state playoff in their respective
states. We accept the challenge
of playing these teams as we
get ready for our region play
in January. We get an extra
practice day this week, and we
look forward to changing some
things in practice.”
Boys head coach Purvis
Dukes said the guys played
hard against strong WACO
and North Augusta teams.
“Our shot selection was not
the best,” he said of Tuesday’s
matchup, adding that inside
the three-point line they were
21/43 and outside the arc,
1/21. Against North Augusta,
the Bears led the first three
quarters. “In the fourth quar
ter, the last four minutes, we
let the game get away from
us,” Dukes said, reporting that
they were 21/43 again from
two-point range and hit 5/27
from the three-point line. “We
aren't being very smart down
the stretch taking quick shots,
and we have to get better at at
tacking the basket as on Friday
we only shot one free throw,
going 1/1 ... It's early and we
have definitely faced some
stiff competition. The kids are
working very hard and getting
better each day.”
Lead scorers for the girls
against WACO were Ja’Niyah
Gardner with 16 points and 4
steals, and Dy’mon Webb, who
had 10 points, 8 rebounds and
2 assists. Tre’yonna Jones had
7 rebounds and 4 blocks.
James Mable led the boys
with 14 points and Dantavian
Allen had 12. Mable also had
11 rebounds and 5 blocks while
Bobby Little had 3 steals.
Gardner led the Lady Bears
again against North Augusta
with 8 points and 2 assists.
Alayla Denmark had 7 points
and 8 rebounds, and Jemerya
Dixon had 7 points. On the
boys’ side, Little led with 15
points, followed by Allen with
12. Mable had 8 rebounds and
5 blocks. Allen contributed 3
steals.
In Saturday’s wins, Kirsten
Clark and Denmark led the
girls’ effort with 20 points
each and 10 and 8 rebounds,
respectively. Little posted 15
points for the boys, along with
3 assists, and Tykevian Hiers
and Dalyn Proctor had 8 points
apiece. Mable led on the board
with 8 rebounds and also had 3
assists, and Allen had 3 assists
and 5 steals.
Burke County hosted Jenkins
County last night (Tuesday)
but results were not available
at press time. They’ll travel to
North Augusta on Saturday,
Dec. 19, with the girls playing
at 5 p.m. and the boys imme
diately following.
Kirsten Clark scored 20 points against North Augusta.

Spartans 1-1 on the week

Edmund Burke’s varsity
basketball teams went 1-1 last
week.
Both teams began the week
with wins on Tuesday, with the
girls defeating David Emanuel
Academy 47-43 and the boys
winning, 66-58.
DEA held the lead on the
girls until the fourth quarter,
and head coach Daniel Hannah
said the Lady Eagles’ point
guard is as good of an indi
vidual scorer as they’ve played
this season. “I was proud of the
way our girls overcame a poor
shooting night by all, played
very well on defense and re
bounded extremely well,” he
said. “Malana Williams did a
great job in our press leading us
with 12 steals. I’m looking for
ward to seeing us gel together
defensively and see who steps
up to help us score each night.”
Williams led the Lady Spar
tans with 15 points, followed
by Marlee Mobley and Zaylie
Baker, who had 12 apiece.
Mobley also nailed 3 three-
pointers. Morgan Clark led on
the boards with 13 rebounds,
and Lexi Seay pulled down 9.
In the first game of the sea
son, the Spartans showed a
lot of effort and hustle on the
defensive end according to
Hannah. “We have to knock
the rust off of our basketball
skills and do a better job fun
damentally on defense, but we
have a great group of athletes
and could play 10-11 players
on any given night,” he said.
“I was proud of our effort by
our seniors, and I’m looking
forward to seeing them grow
in a leadership role as we have
many freshmen and sopho
mores who I think can help us.”
Top scorer for the night was
Carson Woods with 18 points,
including 3 three-pointers,
and Kent Thompson with 13.
Woods also had 8 rebounds.
On Thursday, the girls had
a close call with Westminster,
falling 44-42 in the end.
“Our girls came out hot and
kept it close most of the night,
but we couldn’t quite get over
the hump and maintain a solid
lead,” Hannah said. “We’re
starting to get in shape and had
a chance at the end to win it,
but I made a situational choice
that I thought would put us in
the best position to win on a
last second play, and it didn’t
work out. A lot can be learned
from a loss and we’ll take those
lessons and move forward.
Williams and Clark were
the frontrunners, scoring 12
points each, while Mobley
posted 8. Kelsey Jaquess and
Baker were 100 percent at the
free throw line, going 3/3 and
2/2, respectively. Clark pulled
down 10 rebounds.
The Spartans also suffered
defeat at the hands of Westmin
ster, falling 66-26.
“In our home opener, we
played a disciplined and tal
ented Wildcat team,” Hannah
said. “Early on we were able
to keep it close before they
opened up a 20-point lead on
us at the half and never looked
back. We have a lot of things
that we need to improve, but
I continue to be impressed by
our athleticism and ability to
convert hustle plays into turn
overs for the other team.”
Woods led the Spartans with
7 points, followed by Grant
Mobley and Braydon Tindell,
who had 5 each. Brantley Jones
had 9 rebounds and Thompson
pulled down 8.
Up next, Edmund Burke is
on the road to Jenkins County
Saturday, Dec. 19. The girls
play at 6 p.m. with the boys
immediately following.
