Burke County’s basketball
teams picked up wins in the
Bear Den last Tuesday, upping
both the boys’ and girls’ records
to 3-2.
The boys dominated Jenkins
County, pulling an 86-41 vic
tory over the Eagles in a game
head coach Purvis Dukes said
was played really well.
“Defensively they got lost,
and it led to some transition
baskets for us,” he said. “We
shot the ball better than we
have all year, shooting 65 per
cent from the field. We also had
a team high of 25 assists on the
night as several different play
ers contributed.”
Leading the effort were Da-
lyn Proctor, who had 13 points,
and Bobby Little, who con
tributed 11. On the boards,
James Mable had 7 rebounds,
followed by Kyran Lields with
6. Mable also had 3 blocks, and
Little, 3 steals. Kobe Brown
led in assists with 8.
The Bears played Aquinas
Monday night, but results
were not available at press
time. Next week, they’ll face
Columbia in the Gentlemen
Classic at Statesboro High
School on Monday, Dec. 28, at
6 p.m. and Portal on Tuesday,
Dec. 29, at 6 p.m.
Burke County’s girls were
also successful with a 44-26
win over Jenkins.
“We started the game off
slow with a halftime score of
19-14,” said head coach Leslie
Lawrence, adding that they
picked it up defensively in the
second half in order to create
some easy baskets on offense.
“I am proud of our team for
responding to the challenge we
posed to them at halftime. We
now have a short break where
we can practice and work to
get better in some areas. I look
forward to watching this team
progress.”
Leading the Lady Bears’ ef
fort was Alayla Denmark, who
had 7 points and 6 rebounds;
Kirsten Clark, 10 points, 6
rebounds and 4 assists; and
Chanteriea Hankerson, 11
points.
Up next, the Last Bears play
Statesboro on the road on Mon
day, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m.

To finish out the year, the
Spartans put a 93-76 hurting on
the Georgia School for Innova
tion and the Classics (GSIC).
Head coach Daniel Han
nah said the boys ran their
transition from defense to of
fense well, adding that Carson
Woods did a good job of push
ing the ball up the floor and
Evan Hirschauer had his best
game so far this season.
“As a coach I’ve been par
ticularly happy that we are
willing to take charges,” he
said. “Braxton Hopper took
two against GSIC, and he leads
the season total for the team.
We’ve had at least one taken
each game, and that’s a stat that
I hope our guys will take pride
in achieving. This was a great
team win.”
Woods led the Spartans’
offensive effort, earning 20
points on the night. Hirschauer
added 17 and Kent Thompson,
another 16. Grant Mobley went
75 percent from the free-throw
line, hitting 6 of his 8 attempts.
Woods and Hopper led under
the boards, with 10 rebounds
apiece.

and 5 assists, and Hirschauer
snagged 3 steals.
