It's here...
The first round of the COVID-19 vaccine has made its way to Burke County. According to County Nurse Manager Gina Richard
son of the B. Lamar Murray Public Health Center, the Moderna vaccine, as displayed above by nurse practitioner Barbara Ann
Hammett, arrived Monday morning at the health department. “We will be vaccinating first priority groups in the next few days,”
Richardson said, adding that we are still in the early phases of vaccine distribution locally. “Coordination of administration is
critical due to the limited viability once the vaccine is prepared to administer. We are still working on coordinating those efforts
as we are still supporting Richmond County with mass testing efforts.” The number of local COVID-19 cases has reached a
total of 1,111, up 38 from last week. There have been 108 Burke Countians hospitalized, 14 confirmed deaths and three prob
able deaths here, according to the GDPH website. The agency reported Tuesday that there were 518,902 confirmed cases in
the state, with 9,503 deaths.

Georgia DOT suspends lane closures for holidays
To ease the stresses of the
holiday season the Georgia
Department of Transportation
(Georgia DOT) has announced
the suspension of construction-
related lane closures on heavily
traveled interstate highways
and state routes near major
shopping areas and tourist
locations. The suspension
will take place from 5 a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 23, to 10
p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, for the
Christmas holiday. Restrictions
are also in place for the New
Year’s holiday from 5 a.m.
Thursday, Dec. 31, to 5 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 2. The statewide
lane restrictions allow reduced
traffic congestion during the
winter holidays.
“Although traffic volumes
were down earlier this year due
to COVID-19, unfortunately,
fatalities on our roadways have
been up,” said Georgia DOT
State Construction Engineer
John D. Hancock. “I urge

principal James Epps.
“I loved their enthusiasm,”
Murray recalls. “The students
had been learning about
argumentative writing in their
ELA class, so they were well
prepared when he met with
them the following week.”
Epps shared his thoughts in
an email after the production
was recorded.
“The class had researched
how to pitch an idea and even
offered me refreshments before
they began, and some were
dressed in shirts and ties and
their Sunday best,” he said.
“The group apparently had
been spending their recess and
lunchtime collaborating on this
project. Lucy went on to tell me
that she had already written the
first act, and they wanted to act
it out for me. After seeing what

make sure you and your pas
sengers buckle-up. Let’s make
sure everyone has a happy
holiday.”
While lane closures will be
suspended, the department en
courages travelers to exercise
caution as work zone crews
may still be in close proximity
to highways, and safety con
cerns may require some long
term lane closures to remain
in place. In addition, incident
management or emergency,
maintenance-related lane clo
sures could become necessary
at any time on any route.
To help ensure this season of
joy is not marred by tragedy,
Georgia DOT advises holiday
revelers to avoid drinking and
driving. Please designate a so
ber driver in advance or utilize
a ride-share or taxi service.

“I can’t remember seeing
kids so excited as they were
when Mr. Epps gave them
permission to make this dream
come true,” Murray says,
“They waited until he left, and
the room erupted in cheers.”
Along the way, Lucy’s
teamed more and more about
the process of play production.
“A play includes a lot more
than just the script,” she says.
“There’s the script, the props,
the actors, the stage directions;
it’s a lot! I love how it turned
out, and I am super proud of
my friends!”

people know the true meaning
of Christmas and why Jesus
