Out with the old, in with the new
As another new year approaches, we asked some of our community members what they are most
looking forward to in 2021. Here are their responses
We are all looking for
a sense of normalcy, but
I want everyone to do
much better than what
the norm was! Be a little
more compassionate,
understanding ,
appreciative, humble and
loving!!! 2020 was rough
and if we see where we can
help someone else, do it!!
In 2021, let’s be great!

I would like to see
Burke County citizens
and law enforcement come
together and do more in
this community for our
children. I’d like more
citizens to show up at our
county and city council
meetings, standing strong
and voicing their opinions
because they do matter. I’d
love to see more citizens
join the Citizens Police
Academy with the county
and city.

As the new year
approaches, I am
looking forward to new
opportunities, setting and
reaching new goals, and
another year of growth
and learning more about
myself. I think most of
all though, I am looking
forward to living in the
moment with my family
and friends and soaking
up every moment that we
get to be together. This
past year has been so
challenging, but it truly has
shown me the importance
of loving your people
and making the most out
of every day that we are
given.

In 2021,1 look forward
to doing simple things that
I once took for granted,
like hugging my grandpar
ents. Another small thing
like coughing and not hav
ing every head turn in a
room is something I look
forward to. I hope to see
our resiliency of following
healthcare guidelines pay
off. However, even if we
still are required to wear
masks six months into
2021, I look forward to
serving in our community.

Do you know a local business
or citizen whose dedication to
Burke County should be rec
ognized?
The Burke County Chamber
of Commerce is now accepting
applications for Citizen of the
Year and Business of the Year.
“I think we can all agree
that 2020 is one for the record
books,” said Burke County
Chamber President Ashley
Roberts. “While there have
been a wide array of challenges
and hardships many have ex
perienced, it has given us the
opportunity to witness some
of the best in our community.
We have seen countless acts
of kindness, unity, generosity,
resiliency and innovation. This
provides a great opportunity for
us to highlight and showcase
some of the people, businesses
or organizations in our recogni
tion of these awards.”
The deadline for nomina
tions is Friday, Jan. 8. Nomi
nation forms may be obtained
at the Chamber office, located
at 241 East 6th St. in Waynes
boro, or by calling the office at
706.554.5451.
Roberts said that a com
mittee of impartial members
will meet after the deadline to
discuss the nominations and
complete the selection process
for the recipient of each award.
Last year, husband and wife
Paul and Jean Vaught were
named Citizen of the Year for
their dedication to helping the
homeless, the hungry, elderly
and children, not just locally
but across the world.
The Business of the Year
recipient was Collins Bonded
Warehouse, whose owner,
Chris Collins, was recognized
for a lifetime of contributions
to agriculture as well as giving
in time and financial support
to local charitable, civic and
social organizations.
