BCRD classes specific to seniors’ needs
DIANA ROYAL
jdianaroyal@gmail.com
Though the classes have
been around for a while, there’s
nothing like a new year to get
folks motivated and off the
couch (or on it in some cases).
That’s even more important
for senior citizens, and Lori
Chance, fitness instructor at
the Burke County Recreation
Department, has just the thing
for them.
BCRD offers three differ
ent classes geared toward the
elderly, but Chance says the
classes are also beneficial to
folks who are new to exercise
or who have limited mobility.
Take a Seat Cardio and
Strength is just as its name
implies.
“All cardio and weight lift
ing is done seated,” she ex
plains, adding that the class
incorporates cardio condi
tioning, strength training and
flexibility training and uses a
variety of equipment including
dumbbells, kettlebells, resis
tance bands and Pilates rings.
The class meets on Tuesday
and Thursday mornings from
10-10:45.
Also on Tuesdays is the
morning stretch class. In the
15-minute course, from 11-
11:15, participants are also in
a seated position, but this time
incorporate yoga-type stretch
ing Chance says.
In the final course, held on
Thursdays from 11-11:15 after
the Take a Seat class, the focus
is on exercises that are benefi
cial to seniors to help aid in fall
prevention.
I love teaching seniors,”
Chance, who has been a BCRD
instructor for 35 years, ex
claims excitedly. “It is so re
warding to see them come into
a class and make tremendous
progress. The general popula
tion takes mobility and flex
ibility for granted while the
seniors know better! I am
told time and again how much
better they feel having started
exercising. They also greatly
benefit from the fellowship
of coming together with other
people. Sometimes I think they
benefit as much from the inter
action as from the exercise.”
It’s also affordable. “You can
get all the classes I teach for the
low low price of twenty dollars
per month with no contract,”
she says, emphasizing the fee
is not $20 for one class. “A
client can attend all the classes
for $20.”
In addition to the senior
classes, Chance also instructs
body conditioning and yoga
classes and will be starting be
ginners boot camp in January.
“Sharing fitness with my
community has been life
changing for me,” she says,
“and I hope to be able to help
others.”

Senate runoff brings in
more than $340 million
BEAU EVANS
Capitol Beat News Service
The four candidates in Geor
gia’s U.S. Senate runoff races
have reeled in huge donations
ahead of the Jan. 5 election,
raising more than $340 mil
lion between them since mid-
October.
The two Democratic con
tenders, Jon Ossoff and Rev.
Raphael Warnock, combined
for the larger haul of roughly
$210 million, while incumbent
Republican Sens. David Per
due and Kelly Loeffler together
amassed $132 million.
The races have drawn in
tense national attention since
the outcome will decide the
balance of power in Wash
ington, D.C. Wins by both
Ossoff and Warnock would
hand Democrats control of
both chambers of Congress
and the White House following
President-elect Joe Biden’s win
in the Nov. 3 general election.
The roughly $342 million to
tal for all four candidates adds
to millions of dollars more in
spending on campaign televi
sion ads, mailers, social media
and door-knocking by dozens
of outside groups that look to
make the pair of Senate races
among the most expensive in
American history.

investigator Heather Bryant

Office after that department

Ossoff, a Democrat who
owns an investigative journal
ism company, collected nearly
$107 million during the fund
raising period running from
Oct. 15 to Dec. 16. His oppo
nent, Perdue, the Republican
former corporate executive,
raised about $68 million within
the same time.
Warnock, the Democratic
senior pastor of Atlanta’s Eb-
enezer Baptist Church, raised
more than $103 million over
the two-month filing period
compared to $64 million raised
by his opponent Loeffler, an
Atlanta businesswoman who
earlier in the race loaned $23
million of her own money to
her campaign.
Each candidate still has mil
lions more to draw down for
ads and other get-out-the-vote
activities as the candidates
enter the final week of cam
paigning in the Jan. 5 runoffs.
It’s not guaranteed the big
fundraising figures can secure
victory for any of the cam
paigns. Recent polls show the
races as toss-ups and expert
observers are not placing any
bets on the outcomes.
Democrats feel momentum
on their side after Georgia vot
ers flipped the state for a Dem
ocratic candidate for the first
time since 1992 in Biden’s win
abandoned house located at
436 West 8th St., just a few
doors from his residence.
Maj. Jones said there was no
evidence of foul play or trauma
present where the body was
found and that Georgia Bureau
over President Donald Trump.
Republicans are pushing to
invigorate conservative voters
to block Democratic control of
the federal government.
The candidates have not been
the only fundraising machines
in recent weeks as several po
litical action committees rack
up tens of millions of dollars to
bolster their preferred parties.
Notable are two committees
backed on the one hand by
former gubernatorial candidate
and rising Democratic star Sta
cey Abrams, and on the other
by former President George W.
Bush’s campaign guru,Repub
lican strategist Karl Rove.
Fair Fight, the group founded
by Abrams, has amassed nearly
$57 million since mid-October
with nearly $24 million left to
spend down the stretch for the
Democratic contenders.
The Georgia Battleground
Fund, overseen by the Na
tional Republican Senatorial
Committee with Rove leading
fundraiser efforts, has brought
in more than $49 million since
mid-October and has more than
$15 million remaining.
The three-week early voting
period for the Senate runoffs
that began Dec. 14 wraps up
later this week.
Continued from front
of Investigation Crime Lab
is conducting an autopsy to
determine the cause of death,
approximate time of death and
toxicology. The results will
take several weeks.
