Vaccine
BEAU EVANS
Capitol Beat News Service
COVID-19 vaccines are set
to roll out for Georgians ages
65-years and older, police of
ficers and firefighters in the
coming weeks as hospitals,
health clinics and nursing
homes continue divvying up a
limited supply of early doses,
Gov. Brian Kemp said Thurs
day.
The expansion comes as
vaccine providers administer
shots more quickly in rural
parts of Georgia than in metro
areas, giving some places
capacity to offer vaccines for
vulnerable people besides just
health-care workers and nurs
ing home residents, said state
Public Health Commissioner
Dr. Kathleen Toomey.
Officials are now aiming
to open drive-thru clinics in
metro Atlanta sometime next
week to administer vaccines
The Chamber is currently
accepting applications for both
Citizen of the Year and Busi
ness of the Year, and the final
day to get in a nomination is
this Friday, Jan. 8.
Nomination forms are avail
able at the Chamber office,
located at 241 East 6th St. in
by the thousands of doses for
health-care workers at a given
location, rather than the lesser
amounts seen at local provider
clinics where storing vaccines
at cold temperatures is chal
lenging.
Nearly 62,000 vaccine dos
es had been administered in
Georgia as of late Wednesday
afternoon, according to state
Department of Public Health
data, which tends to lag by a
day or two. Around 432,000
doses had been shipped and
more than 1,000 providers are
on hand to administer them.
“We will use every available
resource to get the vaccine out
as quickly as possible [and] to
be part of the existing logistical
infrastructure that we have,”
Kemp said at a news confer
ence Thursday.
The ability of some rural
areas to vaccinate local health
care workers has recently left
doses “sitting in freezers”
Waynesboro, or can be ob
tained by calling the office at
706.554.5451.
Ashley Roberts, Chamber
president, said a committee of
impartial members will meet
to discuss the nominations
received and to select the re
cipients for each of the awards.
while hundreds of health-care
workers in more urban parts
of the state are still on wait
ing lists for the tightly limited
supply of vaccines currently
available, Toomey said.
“That is unacceptable,”
Toomey said. “We have lives
to save. ... It really made
sense for us to move into this
additional category for such
vulnerable persons.”
The governor said it’s likely
more efficient for providers in
rural areas to use all their vac
cines rather than send surplus
doses to metro areas since fresh
shipments would have already
arrived by then. He said state
officials are constantly tweak
ing distribution plans amid
uncertainty over how many
vaccines Georgia will get in the
early stages of the nationwide
rollout.
Meanwhile, Georgia heads
into the New Year’s holiday
with positive cases and hos
pitalizations from COVID-19
continuing to spike. The state
has been averaging around
5,000 new positive cases daily
in recent days after logging a
high of nearly 8,000 cases on
Christmas Eve.
Kemp urged Georgians to
avoid gathering in large groups
for New Year’s Eve celebra
tions and for young people to
quarantine themselves from
more vulnerable family mem
bers for a couple weeks if they
plan on attending any parties.
“The virus is still here and
presents as big a threat as
ever,” Kemp said. “We need
all Georgians to continue to act
responsibly in the best interest
of their loved ones and fellow
citizens to limit the spread over
the holiday weekend.”
More than 550,000 people
in Georgia have tested posi
tive for COVID-19 so far. As
of Wednesday, the virus had
killed 9,808 Georgians.

Frustration-free Holiday Returns
KELVIN COLLINS
According to reports, more
than 28% of us returned a holi
day gift during last year’s holi
day season. Clothing topped
the list with shoes and elec
tronics following close behind.
With the rise of online shop
ping due to COVID 19, this
number is sure to rise in 2020.
But with holiday returns also
comes holiday return fraud.
Return fraud comes in many
forms, including purchasing
merchandise for short-term use
and then returning the item, re
turning stolen merchandise, or
using reused, stolen or falsified
receipts to return merchandise
for a profit.
But in most cases, consum
ers are just trying to return
wrong sizes or items. Many
retailers, both online and brick
and mortar, have return poli
cies in place to not only protect
the consumer but their busi
nesses as well.
If you have something that
doesn't fit, or you already have
the item or it's just the wrong
thing, BBB offers the follow
ing tips for returning holiday
gifts:
Know and understand the
seller’s return policy. We know
that most stores list return
policies their website or on the
back of the receipt. Make sure
you fully understand what is re
quired for a return or exchange,
and if you have questions, call
the store directly to ask about
your specific situation. Brick
and mortar stores may have
different return policies than
online counterparts.
Keep the receipt. Include a
gift receipt with all gifts, so it is
easier for the recipient to return
or exchange the gift if it’s not
the right fit.
Keep original packaging
and ask about restocking fees.
Some stores may require prod
ucts be returned in original
purchase condition, unused or
unopened. In addition, some
merchants charge a restocking
or “open box” fee for returns
of electronic products or large-
ticket items. Make sure you
read about these policies and
ask questions through email
or live chats to make sure you
understand the policy.
Bring identification. Because
of return fraud, some retail
ers will ask for identification
when making a return. If you
are returning or exchanging a
gift that you bought, make sure
you bring the credit card used
to make that purchase in case
you don’t have the receipt.
Read product warranty first.
In some cases, retail stores
are not liable if the product
turns up defective or damaged.
They may require consumers
to mail the product directly
to the manufacturer in order
to receive monetary refunds,
credit or product replacement.
Don’t delay. In almost every
case, stores require you to
return within a specific time
frame. If you wait too long, you
may miss your chance.
Read the fine print before
purchasing a rebate-eligible
item. Rebates are great for get
ting a good deal but can come
with strict requirements. Make
sure you understand how the
rebate will be issued. Some
rebates need to be redeemed
immediately and expire after
a certain period of time. Read
the instructions carefully and
check the return policy. You
may experience difficulty re
turning an item if the rebate
requires you to open or send
in part of the packaging, such
as the UPC or box top. Keep
a copy of the submitted rebate
materials and note the date on
which you sent it in. Mark your
calendar for when you should
receive the rebate.
Simply knowing a store’s
refund and exchange policies
before making a purchase can
save lots of frustration and
help you avoid standing in
long lines after the holidays
are over.
