The new year brought with
it two victories for the Lady
Spartans as well as a win for
Edmund Burke’s varsity boys.
Both teams started 2021 off
on the road against Glascock
County on Jan. 5.
According to head coach
Daniel Hannah, the Lady Spar
tans (5-1, 1-0) started off hot
with a quick 4-0 lead just be
fore Malana Williams went out
with a knee injury. From there,
the girls had a tough game
against a scrappy Glascock
team.
“We struggled for a bit to
regain our composure and had
to play several people at differ
ent positions, and I was proud
at how the girls stepped up and
answered the call to do so,”
Hannah said. “Marlee Mobley
did a good job playing point
guard by platoon with Zaylie
Baker and Lexi Seay. Zaylie
gave us the lift we needed of
fensively once she was able to
settle in and get into a groove.”
Hannah credited several
other players for their efforts in
the 40-32 victory, adding that
Avery Wiggins did a good job
coming off the bench and look
ing to score and that he was
really impressed with freshman
Kallie Dailey and how she was
constantly looking for her shot.
“Seay really helped us in the
second half, bringing the ball
down the court and getting us
into our offense, and Morgan
Clark, as always, did a great
job on the boards for us before
fouling out late in the fourth.”
Baker led the offensive ef
fort against Glascock with 17
points, including 2 three-point
ers, and Wiggins and Clark
contributed 6 points apiece.
On the boards, Clark pulled
down 8 rebounds while Baker
and Wiggins each had 4.
Dailey had 4 steals on the
night, and Baker tallied 2. Mo
bley also had a steal as well as
2 blocks and 2 assists.
The boys (3-2,0-1) were also
victorious against Glascock,
pulling a 71-48 win over the
Panthers.
“I was satisfied with our
effort on defense for the most
part, minus a few hiccups at
times,” he said, adding that
Brantley Jones has had the best
scoring output of the year. “I
thought Carson Woods did a
good job initiating our offense
in transition. Grant Mobley
came off the bench with good
energy and provided some
scoring. Braxton Hopper and
Kent Thompson continued to
give us a solid scoring presence
in spurts and did a great job
getting the ball to our guards
to begin our fast breaks.”
Topping the leaderboard was
Jones and Woods, who had 17
and 16 points, respectively.
Jones also recorded 3 assists,
7 rebounds and 4 steals. Hop
per and Evan Hirschauer each
pulled down 6 rebounds.
Additionally, Woods,
Hirschauer and Parker Oliver
got away with 2 steals apiece.
Oliver also had 2 blocks, and
Bray don Tindell had 4.
Though they were short-
handed on their home court Fri
day night against Monsignor
Donovan of Athens, the Lady
Spartans managed to come
out on top in their first region
game of the season, defeating
the Lady Rams 46-13.
“I was really proud of how
Baker stepped up and led us
at the point guard position,”
Hannah said. “I thought we
did well in the spurts that we
pressed, and our eighth-graders
that dressed for the game did a
fantastic job of stepping in at
the varsity level for their first
experience.”
Clark was at the top of the
leaderboard with 13 points and
8 rebounds and went 3-4 from
the free-throw line. Mobley
added 12 points, including 2
three-pointers.
As a whole, the Lady Spar
tans tallied 22 steals, with 5
from Mobley and 4 each from

Marlee Mobley had 2 assists and 2 blocks in the Lady Spar
tans win over Glascock County and put up 12 points against
Mon Don.
Clark and Wiggins. Baker,
Hannah Posey, Carleigh Woods
and Payton Palmer had 2 each,
and Dailey contributed 1.
The Spartans fell 75-46 in
their matchup against Mon
Don.
“We got a lot of looks at
shots that we wanted through
out the game but failed to con
vert on almost a dozen close
shots,” Hannah said following
the loss. “We want to play
fast, but on Friday we pushed
ourselves to play a bit faster
than we were comfortable with
playing. As a coach, I've got to
do a better job at getting us to
calm down when we get out
of control and hopefully that
will help us make our lay-ups
and cut down on throwing the
ball away when we're playing
too fast.”
Woods and earned Tindell
earned 8 points each on the
night, with Tindell hitting 2
three-pointers, and Jones added
another 7 points.
Tindell, Hopper and Jones

It was a good, old-fashioned
beat down.
The Lady Bears (4-2, 1-0)
stomped Harlem’s Lady Bull
dogs on Saturday 52-18 in their
first region game of the season.
“We did some good things
in this game despite only a
limited number of practices,”
said head coach Leslie Law
rence. “We had players step
up in every aspect of the game
to help us be successful. I am
proud of our players, how they
responded to our challenge and
for going on the road and pick
ing up a win.”
Leading scorers for the Lady
Bears were Chanteriea Hanker-
son with 12 points and Danielle
McClendon, who contrib
uted 10. Ja’Niyah Gardner and
Alayla Denmark posted 9 and
8 points, respectively.
The boys (4-5, 1-0) also
came out victorious against
Harlem, winning 57-52 in
overtime.
It was a tight contest, ac
cording to head coach Purvis
Dukes.
“We never led by more than
three all night long,” Dukes
said, adding that his players
stayed calm during some late
stretches and made some huge
plays. “Bobby Little is playing
well and hit a big shot late to
send the game into overtime.
Defensively, on their last pos
session of regulation, the guys
did a tremendous job on de
fending without fouling and
securing the rebound to send
the game into OT.”

the night, but his jumper with
under 20 seconds in overtime
put the Bears up by 4. “That
was huge,” Dukes said. “The
kids did a great job of defend
ing on the next possession, and
Malik Mobley came in to make
two free throws with under ten
seconds to put us ahead for
good. They are learning on the
fly, and a road win is a good
win in this league.”
Little was the lead scorer for
the Bears, with 27 points, fol
lowed by James Mable, who
had 13. Little and Mobley had
5 assists apiece.
On the boards, Mable had 12
