Remote WiFi access provided for
students during distance learning

The Burke County Public
School System continues its
efforts to make virtual learning
easier on students and families.
According to BCPS Public
Information Officer Amy J.
Nunnally, the school system
has created a remote access
bus route to help address WiFi
needs.
“Although internet access/
service is out of the district's
hands, we will do our best
to make other accommoda
tions,” she said,explaining that
throughout the week, 11 school
buses are currently making
stops all over the county, from
8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. in order to
help students stay connected.
“The buses are equipped with
WiFi transmitters, and students
can access it from home or an
automobile that is parked near
the bus location. Buses are
typically at each location for
approximately one and a half
hours before moving to the
next stop.”
Nunnally said a link to the
live schedule is available on
the district website at www.
burkeschools.org and that the
link was sent out to all students
and parents as well.
“Locations and times of the
schedule are subject to change
based on the needs of our fami
lies,” she added.
There are also many church
es and public buildings that are
serving as remote locations to
accommodate students.
Nunnally explained these
locations are accessed in the
same way as the buses; stu
dents who live in the area of the
transmitter will have access or
they may drive to the location
and work from their vehicle.
Churches that are serving as
remote locations include Giv
ens Grove, McBean, Vineyard,
Thompson Bridge, Brown
Grove, Hopeful, Noah’s Ark,
Bark Camp, First Baptist of
Gough, Bottsford Spring, Ju
bilee Christian Worship Center
and Bethel. The Midville Com
munity House, Charles Walker
Building, Boggs Academy and
Girard City Hall also provide
WiFi connections.
In addition to finding ways to
stay connected, the school sys
tem is also continuing to feed
its students. Meal boxes will
be available for pick up this
Friday, Jan. 15, from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. at any
of the district’s five schools.
“Due to the adjustment in
schedule, students will be
learning from home until Jan.
19, and we would like to help
our families by providing nu
tritious meals,” Nunnally said.
“Families with children at mul
tiple schools can pick up all of
their boxes at one location. If
the school is out of meal boxes,
please go to another school to
pick up. Upon arrival, parents/
caregivers will be asked to
provide the name and current
school enrollment for each
child in an effort to reduce
duplicate distribution of boxes.
The boxes contain five days
worth of meals: breakfasts,
lunches, dinners and snacks.
There will be refrigerated items
in the boxes so it’s important
to unpack them as soon as
possible.”
Parents are encouraged to
download the school’s free
app and to visit the district’s
website often to stay up to date
on important news.

ROY F. CHALKER JR.

After a few weeks’ delay,
newly elected Chief Magis
trate Judge Cynthia Kelley
has had her associate judges
approved by the Superior
Court Judges of the Augusta
Judicial Circuit.
Judge Kelley received
word that her three appoint
ments had been approved
Tuesday afternoon. Chief
Judge Carl Brown, Jr. had
delayed approval of the
appointments, reportedly
because former Chief Mag
istrate Andrew Palmer was
not on the list.
This week Palmer, who
is now practicing with a
private law firm in Evans,
said he has “chosen to stay
out of politics.” He added,
“I wish the magistrate court
all the best.”
Kelley’s appointees in
clude Mamie Parks, Julian
“Mike” Walraven and Clif
ford Carter.
Kelley said, “My mag
istrate team is bipartisan,
contains a United States
veteran who is also a for
mer rural justice judicial
fellow with a focus on rural
Georgia Magistrate Courts,
a retired police officer and
certified instructor with
over thirty years in law en
forcement and an educator
who has served eight years
as a magistrate.”
