Bears struggle in region play

Last week was a rough one
on the basketball court for
Burke County, whose varsity
teams managed one slim win
out of four games.
The Lady Bears (5-3, 2-1)
were victorious on Friday, Jan.
15, over a competitive Hephzi-
bah team, narrowly claiming
the region win, 48-47.
“We struggled offensively
early,” girls head coach Leslie
Lawrence said, adding that
they were still able to create
easy baskets by turning up the
tempo defensively. “We are
going to watch him and work
on some things offensively
in practice to improve. Our
players have done a great job
defensively to allow us to cre
ate some pace in games.”
Alayla Denmark topped the
scoreboard with 12 points.
She also had 10 rebounds and
2 steals.
Dy’Mon Webb contributed
11 points, 4 rebounds and 4
steals, and Chanteriea Hanker-
son had 9 points.
On Saturday in the Bear Den,
the girls fell 39-31 to Cross
Creek in their first region loss
of the season.
“We stalled offensively in
this game,” Lawrence said.
“We had too many turnovers to
overcome a reasonable deficit.
Our defense did a great job
in holding Cross Creek to 39
points. However, we have
to be able to score and limit
turnovers to beat a good team.”
Denmark and Hankerson
were again top leaders for
the Lady Bears, with Den
mark posting 6 points and 5
rebounds, and Hankerson, 7
points and 5 steals. Tre’yonna
Jones also had 5 points, 4 re
bounds and 3 steals.
The Bears lost to Hephzi-
bah 51-42 and to Cross Creek
73-56.
“Hephzibah came out and
played well defensively, and
they made some three-point
shots early that put us in a
definite hole,” boys head coach
Purvis Dukes said. “We trailed
by eight at the end of the first
quarter, and the deficit stayed
pretty much there all night.”
Bobby Little led the Bears
with 15 points.
Against Cross Creek, Dukes
said the Bears played a lot bet
ter in the first quarter, trailing
by just one point at its end,
17-16. “The second quarter, we
were outscored 21-8. Against
really good teams, we have
to be more consistent on both
ends of the court. Cross Creek
was the state runner-up last
season and returned some key
players off that group so you
have to play solid basketball.
“The guys are giving a good
effort. We just have to be able
to score the basketball more
consistently from our comfort
zones as Saturday from the
guard spot we were 10/40 from
two-point and and 2/16 from
the three-point line.”
Top scorers for the Bears
were Dalyn Proctor with 16;
James Mable, 13; and Khyron
Fields, 10. Mable also had 12
rebounds. Little has 7 assists
and 4 blocks, and Mable had
3 blocks.
On Tuesday, both teams
played Morgan County, but
results were not available at
press time.
Up next, Burke County visits
Cross Creek on Saturday, Jan.
23, with games beginning at
5 p.m. They host Thomson
Monday, Jan. 25, and games
begin at 6.
Edmund Burke working on hustle

Edmund Burke’s varsity bas
ketball teams lost a handful of
games on the court last week.
Both teams found them
selves on the losing end against
Jenkins County on Tuesday,
Jan. 12, with the girls (6-3,2-1)
falling 65-48 and the boys (3-5,
0-3), losing 50-43.
“The girls played a good
defensive Jenkins County team
and learned some good lessons
on what we need to improve
to become better on offense,”
head coach Daniel Hannah
said. “Missing three starters
really hurt us on the offensive
end of the court, but once
again we learned a lot about
ourselves as to what we need
to work on individually in our
workouts to improve our team
performance.”
Hannah said the boys started
off playing well in the first
quarter but weren't able to
score consistently in the sec
ond and third quarters while
also getting beat up on the
offensive boards. In turn, Jen
kins County gained a double
digit lead over the Spartans,
and though they made a run in
the fourth, it wasn’t enough to
overcome the deficit. “Parker
Oliver played a fantastic game
off the bench for us as did
Bradyon Tindell and Grant
Mobley,” Hannah said. “They
did a great job of bringing en
ergy on both ends of the court.”
Morgan Clark led the Lady
Spartans with 10 points and 9
rebounds. Kallie Dailey had
7 points and 8 rebounds, and
Marlee Mobley had 7 points.
Oliver, a freshman, had 11
points for the Spartans, includ
ing 3 three-pointers, and he
also had 3 steals. Tindell had
8 points, and Carson Woods
pulled down 6 rebounds.
EBA also had a round of
losses against Gatewood on
Friday, Jan. 15. The girls were
defeated 48-39, and the boys,
80-59.
“The Lady Gators gave us
all we wanted,” Hannah said,
adding that the Lady Spartans
struggled immensely on the de
fensive end to get stops consis
tently and had a hard time get
ting the ball to go in the basket
on the offensive end. “That's
a recipe for a tough night for
most basketball teams. I was
proud of how our girls played
tough to the end. Zaylie Baker
and Morgan Clark led us on the
offensive end, and we got good
minutes from Kelsey Jaquess,
Marlee Mobley, Hannah Posey
and Lexi Seay; we just couldn't
overcome the deficit we gave
ourselves early. We're begin
ning to find our stride as a
team after the loss of one of
our senior leaders, Malana
Williams. If we do figure this
out, these girls will be fun to
watch down the home stretch
of the season.”
As for the boys, they played
a solid game until falling apart
early in the fourth, taking
ill-advised shots and not stop
ping their transition offense,
according to Hannah. “I felt we
showed improvement against
the press when we played
under control and that Evan
Hirschauer and Carson Woods
did a good job of keeping
us calm early on,” he said.
“Braxton Hopper brought us
some solid passing and needs
to continue to look for his shot.
The game ended with a deep
buzzer beater from freshman
Connor Syms.”
Baker led the girls against
the Lady Gators, racking up 16
points and 4 steals. Clark had
12 points and 10 rebounds, and
Jaquess had 8 rebounds. Woods
topped the boys leaderboard
with 22 points, and Brantley
Jones had 12. Hopper had 8
rebounds, and Brantley had 6
rebounds and 3 blocks.
The Spartans also traveled
to Athens Saturday for a game
against Monsignor Donovan.
“We led the majority of the
game, but our lack of focus on
the defensive glass ultimately
cost us,” Hannah said, adding
that he was impressed with
Woods and his effort on offense
and that Jones did a great job
scoring and on the offensive
boards. “We played much
better the second time around
against them but just came up
a tad short.”
The final score was 75-46,
with Woods and Tindell earn
ing 8 points apiece. Jones had
7 points. Tindell, Hopper and
Jones each had 5 rebounds.
EBA hosted Briarwood last
night (Tuesday) but results
were not available at press
time. They’ll host DEA on
Thursday, Jan. 21 and will
travel to TJA Friday, Jan. 22
and Brentwood Tuesday, Jan.
26. Games begin at 6 each
night.
