The Lady Bears added two
more wins to their season
record after picking off both
Morgan County and Thomson
last week.
In the Morgan County game,
head coach Leslie Lawrence
said Tre’yonna Jones gave the
girls a lift in the fourth quarter
with defensive and hustle plays
down the stretch.
She topped the Lady Bears’
leaderboard with 11 points, 3
rebounds and2 steals. Danielle
McClendon added 8 points and
7 rebounds and Janiya Brown,
4 points and 5 rebounds. Burke
County finished 38-29.
In the Lady Bears’ 62-39 win
over Thomson, Lawrence said
their focus was to develop an
inside post presence. “We felt
like our post players gave us a
huge advantage,” she said.
Alayla Denmark posted 15
points, 4 rebounds, 7 steals and
2 blocks. Other top scorers in
cluded Jones with 10 points, 6
rebounds and 3 steals; McClen
don, 10 points, 11 rebounds
and 5 steals; and Ja’Niyah
Gardner, 12 points and 3 steals.
“I am proud of our team for
picking up the two region wins
at home,” Lawrence said. “We
have to be able to win our home
games to be successful in re
gion play. Our kids did a great
job defensively in both games.
We were able to get stop when
we needed to during the game.
We feel like we are starting to
get some consistency and gain
ing an identity as a team.”
This Friday, Burke County
celebrates Homecoming in the
Bear Den against Harlem. The
girls game begins at 6 p.m.
with the boys immediately
following.

Edmund Burke had a full
week of basketball that cul
minated in two wins for the
boys varsity team and one for
the girls.
On Tuesday, EBA played
Briarwood, with the girls fall
ing 76-57 and the boys picking
up a 64-60 win in overtime.
“We started to look like the
ball team we resembled prior to
Christmas,” head coach Daniel
Hannah said of the girls’ per
formance. “Our transition and
ability to get open looks in the
half court allowed us to score
at a rate that we will need to
in order to win ball games, but
we have to do a much better
job in transition defense,” he
said.I was impressed by Mor
gan Clark and Zaylie Baker's
abilities to score, and the effort
on the defensive end by Marlee
Mobley and Kallie Dailey was
some of the best I've seen out
of the two of them so far this
year. Even though we were not
the winners on Tuesday, I was
encouraged by the steps we
took toward being a competi
tive team.”
Baker led the Lady Spar
tans against Briarwood with
19 points, including 5 three-
pointers. Clark had 18 points,
6 rebounds and 3 steals.
Hannah said the boys had
one of the slowest starts on
offense of any boys team he’s
ever coached against Briar
wood.
“We just could not get a shot
to fall consistently,” he said.
“Braxton Hopper found him
self on the offensive end, and I
hope he continues to show the
confidence he showed against
the Bucs. We got great min
utes off the bench from Grant
Mobley, Braydon Tindell and
William Hood. The energy they
brought really helped keep us
in the game. In the second half
we did a much better job box
ing out and securing defensive
rebounds, which allowed us to
get out in transition and get our
offense flowing. Big shots at
the end of the game by Carson
Woods and Braydon allowed
us to pull off the comeback
win.”
Hopper led the charge with
18 points and 5 rebounds while
Woods posted 16 points, 10
rebounds, 2 assists and4 steals.
Against DEA, the Lady
Spartans struggled to shoot
consistently throughout the
game, yet Hannah says they
played good on ball defense
and that was the ultimate dif
ference in the game.
“I was impressed at how
our girls held their best scorer
well under her season aver
age, especially Kallie Dailey
and Zaylie Baker,” he said.
“Morgan Clark, Lexi Seay and
Kelsey Jaquess did a great job
on the boards for us. We got
good minutes from Carleigh
Woods, Payton Palmer and
Hannah Posey off the bench.
If we can improve on our team
rebounding we have some
potential to upset some teams
going forward.”
Clark tallied 14 points, 11
rebounds and 2 steals on the
night. Jaquess had 8 rebounds
and 3 steals.
The boys were also victori
ous against DEA, defeating the
Eagles 69-35.
“I thought we played good
in transition and did a great job
on the boards with 26 offensive
rebounds,” he said. “We were
able to get a lot of put backs
that helped us get through a
difficult shooting night from
the outside. Brantley Jones was
great around the basket and led
us in scoring. Kent Thompson
probably has his best game
from a hustle stand point and
will help us a lot going for
ward if he’ll continue to do so.
Parker Oliver was all over the
place on the defensive end and
getting us out in our transition
offense.”
Jones topped the leaderboard
with 16 points followed by
Parker who had 11 points and 3
steals. Thompson pulled down
8 rebounds.
The week ended with double
losses to longtime rival TJA.
Hannah said the Lady Spar
tans learned a lot about them
selves and working together to
break a full court press against
the Lady Jags. “It was a good
learning experience for us,
and we were able to put up
a bunch of points,” he said.
“We're still working on how to
rebound consistently as a team.
Morgan Clark led us as our
top rebounder and top scorer.
Kelsey Jaquess had her best
game since coming back from
being out for a couple weeks.
Every game we're getting a
little bit better, and I am enjoy
ing watching us grow together
as a basketball team.”

Senior Morgan Clark goes up for 2.
Clark was the top scorer for
the third game in a row, earning
18 points for the Lady Spartans
while posting 9 rebounds and a
steal. Jaquess had 12 points, 6
rebounds, 2 steals and a block,
and Baker had 11 points, 4
rebounds and 4 steals.
“We played a tough TJ team
and came out with a loss by
one in overtime,” Hannah
said of the Spartans. “We had
good offensive production
from Carson Woods, Braydon
Tindell, Braxton Hopper and
Kent Thompson. Brandy Jones
and Carson did a good job on
the boards for us with both
grabbing over 10 rebounds. If
we can do a better job of un
derstanding when to attack the
basket in transition and when
to set up an offensive set, we’ll
win games like this.”
Woods brought in 18 points
for the Spartans and had 10
rebounds. Tindell posted 12
points, all three-pointers.
EBA played last night (Tues
day) against Brentwood, but
results were not available at
press time. They’ll travel to
Gatewood Friday and Augusta
Prep on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
