IDOLATRY
Idolatry is the worship of
idols or excessive devotion to,
or reverence for some person
or thing. An idol is anything
that replaces the one, true God.
We have come face to face with
modern day idolatry; an ex
cessive devotion or reverence
for a person. We had no idea
that democracy was so fragile
or the willingness of elected
leaders to abandon their oath
of office and the Constitution.
Maybe we needed a shock to
the system to remind us that
democracy constantly needs
defending. We witnessed a
cult leader rise to the highest
office in the land whose au
thority was respected and often
unquestioned. Followers had
a fervent belief in him even as
they experienced his deviant
and perverse behavior. Our
cult leader told the public what
he had done and would do and
many accepted it.
President Trump did not
require his followers to wear
matching clothing or shave
their heads, and he did not
claim divine revelation; how
ever, he made available “Make
America Great Again” base
ball caps at the White House
Holidays website for $24.95.
President Trump expressed the
sentiment that he believed in
no power greater than himself.
In an interview with CNN, as
the Republican presidential
frontrunner, he said he did
not regret never asking God
for forgiveness, because he
didn't have much for which
to apologize. This statement
alone should have given his
Christian followers pause, yet
many evangelical Christian
and Republican supporters of
President Trump paid homage
that bordered on sacrilege.
Trump’s transgressions gen
erated myriad articles and
books citing his sexual assaults
of women, use of coarse lan
guage , marital infidelities, pay
ing off a pom star, sexualizing
his own daughter, rapacious
greed, racial and religious
animus towards Mexicans and
Muslims, and a willingness
to inflict incredible harm on
immigrants and their infant
children. It would seem that
an unrepentant person with this
resume would find no solace
in Christian communities, but
this was not the case. Richard
Land, president of the South
ern Evangelical Seminary,
mega-church pastor Paula
White-Cain and Pastor David
Jeremiah gave their unqualified
support to the President. Pas
tor Jeremiah compared Jared
Kushner and Ivanka Tmmp to
Joseph and Mary. Jerry Falwell
Jr. stated that evangelicals had
found their dream president.
The names of Pastor Robert
Jeffress, Franklin Graham,
President of the Family Re
search Council Tony Perkins,
and Director Jeff Hunt of the
Centennial Institute at Colo
rado Christian Institute were
added to the list of presidential
sympathizers and supporters.
Presidential candidate Tmmp,
while speaking of “my people”
and how smart they were, also
said he could shoot someone
on 5th Avenue and not lose
a single voter. This was the
language of a leader who knew
“his people” and the depth of
their loyalty. This support was
reflected in the comments of
Mark Lee, a Tmmp supporter
who said on CNN, “If Jesus
Christ gets down off the cross
and told me Tmmp is with Rus
sia, I would tell him, Hold on
a second. I need to check with
the president, if it’s true.”
Various focus groups be
lieved Tmmp would do and
did no harm. They believed his
detractors were weak, mean,
and untruthful. The question
that remains after his departure
is “has the fever broken?” Even
as the “Great Man” departs the
White House, how many sup
porters will follow him into the
wilderness? In Colossians 3:5,
it reads, “Put to death, there
fore, whatever belongs to your
earthly nature: sexual immoral
ity, impurity, lust, evil desires
and greed, which is idolatry.”
There is a hope that the current
President, common sense and a
better spirit will prevail in the
new and more promising year.

LINGO, PART 3
When one of my sixth-grad
ers asked me if I were capping,
I knew I hadn’t yet, and likely
will never, master the language
of the young and cool.
Yet here we are, with a third
edition of words you may or
may not know (or think you
know) that are relevant in to
day’s world amongst tweens,
teens and the people who call
themselves social media influ-
encers.
I’ve noticed that I’m actu
ally familiar with many of the
terms; some of them are old
school things we’ve all said
(for example referring to our
friends as “peeps” or catching
particular “vibes” from another
person), and kids today are
actually recycling our words
which proves 1.) history does
repeat itself and 2.) we know
more than kids think we do.
Read on for a dozen more
definitions/translations that
may help clear up your conver
sations with the young folks.
CAP/NO CAP: From what I
gather, a cap is a he, possibly
used in place of bull manure.
“No cap” is the opposite, a
modern day version of “for
real.”
I was in the deer stand yes
terday, and I saw a 300-pound,
20-point buck. No cap.
SHOOK: Emotionally, in
tensely affected by something.
The ending of that movie has
me shook.
STRAIGHT FIRE: Very cool
or trendy.
Those pantaloons are straight
fire, don’t you think, Napo
leon?
LOW-KEY/HIGH-KEY:
Low-key is a discreet feeling
about something while high-
key is being proudly and often
intensely honest and open; an
expression similar to “very.”
I high-key love Marshall
Mathers but low-key think his
newest album is mediocre.
SALTY: Has nothing to do
with flavor; it’s a metaphorical
taste of bitterness.
She was salty when Napo
leon showed up for the ball in
the pantaloons she suggested
but took the credit for his own.
THIRSTY: Craves attention
and will do just about anything
to get it.
Donald was so thirsty after
the Bernie memes went viral
that he learned to knit and
made his own pair of mittens.
YEET: I’ve yet to find an
actual explanation. This is
just something people scream.
Check out @yeetbaby on Tik-
Tok.
*UFO lands in the backyard*
Me: YEET!!!
SIMP: A person, typically a
male, who is sympathetic and
chivalrous to gain the attention
of his love interest; sometimes
thought to try too hard or with
false pretenses.
In the words of Sir-Mix-a-
Lot from his 1992 jam “Baby
Got Back”: A lot of simps
won’t like this song.
GLOW UP: Growing up but
attractively.
Roberta’s glow up is no cap;
you’d never know she wore
headgear and Biore nose strips
for all those years.
OG: Short for original
gangsta but typically refers to
someone popular or high-key
talented.
Daniel scored 37 points in
the basketball game last night.
He is the OG!
SLAPS: awesome, amazing,
really good, etc.
This new song by Miley
Cyrus slaps.
FINSTA: Code word for a
fake Instagram account.
I can’t post about *insert
something bad here* on my
real account because my mom
might see it. Go check on my
Finsta. (Side note: This one is
kind of scary.)
I hope y’all find this helpful;
it’s something to think about
besides politics for at least five
minutes.
