Commission seeks salary increase
DIANA ROYAL

At their monthly meeting
next week, Burke County com
missioners will consider a pro
posal to increase their salaries.
The proposal, which has
appeared in an ad in The True
Citizen, shows that each com
missioner currently makes
$7,653.25, a little less than
$150 per week. The chair
man position comes with a
$10,714.55 salary. The base
pay for commissioners is
$6,000 and is $8,400 for the
chairman of the board.
The proposed salaries, which
would not go into effect until
Jan. 1, 2023, are $9,600 for
commissioners and $12,000
for the chairman. Another
election cycle will take place
prior to the proposed increase
if approved.
County administrator Merv
Waldrop said the amount of
work depends on the commis
sioner. They have an average
of four meetings each month,
including regular board meet
ings as well as various commit
tee meetings, which oftentimes
last a number of hours.
For first year commissioners,
training takes approximately
two weeks and then three days
of training on average after
that.
“There’s no telling how
much time they spend with
their constituents, answer
ing emails, reviewing agenda
packages and keeping up with
issues,” Waldrop added.
The board meets next Tues
day, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. in the
old courtroom of the historic
courthouse.
