Volunteer Income Tax As
sistance (VITA) is a nation
wide program conducted in
partnership with the IRS to
increase the financial stability
of working individuals and
families. VITA is designed to
promote and support free tax
preparation service. VITA is an
effort to provide both a valu
able community service and a
powerful learning experience
for participants. UGA Burke
County Extension office is
offering free simple tax prepa
ration services via video chat
and voice calls from comput
ers with tax professionals. An
intake appointment is required
with Family and Consumer
Sciences Agent Terri Black to
begin the filing process.
For any person who has not
received the first or second
stimulus payments, the amount
not received will be entered
and will receive the stimulus or
recovery rebate credit back in
your tax refund. If you have $0
income, filing a tax return is the
best way to ensure you receive
the recovery rebate refund.
As you are preparing for the
tax season, the standard deduc
tion remains $12,400 (single)
and $24,800 (married filing
jointly). However, this filing
year on top of the standard
deduction, you can still deduct
up to $300 for charitable con
tributions.
Don’t miss this opportunity
to have your simple tax return
completed free of charge and
save a little money for a rainy
day. Appointments are required
and available beginning Feb.
1, but are limited. Call Terri
Black at 706.554.2119 for
more information or to make
an appointment.
BURKE EMA REPORT
The Burke County management Agency answered 20 fire
calls during the week ending Jan. 17. They included seven
brush/grass fires, 10 rescues, two vehicle fires and one public
service call.
The agency also responded to 89 patients’ calls during
the week. Of those, 55 resulted in transports, including 20
to Augusta hospitals and one to another out-of-county hos
pital. Twenty five of the transports were determined to be
emergencies and 30 were non-emergent.

tention.
Williams ran on a progressive
platform and there are those in
this region, including Burke
County Sheriff Alfonzo Wil
liams, who disagree with some
of the changes the new DA is
proposing in the way our courts
would work.
It’s also fair to point out that
Jared Williams did not win his
races in Burke or Columbia.
It was his lopsided win in Au-
gusta-Richmond that put him
over the top as the new DA.
Those are points that cannot
be ignored in this discussion.
I also don’t think it’s fair
to suggest race is the leading
factor in our commission
ers’ decision making. Burke
County got dragged into this by
Columbia and Augusta. We’re
now having to play the hand
we were dealt.
I realize the fact that I’m a
white guy means I’m viewing

this through a different lens;
but if you and I disagree, and
you happen to be black, or any
other race, and our disagree
ment automatically makes one
of us a racist, well then, there’s
no room for a discussion of
ideas and how to move forward
on the tough issues ahead.

Editor:
Mr. Searles I loved your quotes from mega-fake news CNN. So
my first question is how often did you pray for President Trump,
his cabinet, and all branches of our government? Oh, BTW, our
government is not a democracy, it is a republic and you sir should
know the difference since words are your business.
In response, I will not address the lies for CNN. I will do one
small comparison between President Trump and the actions of
this current administration. My information comes from Chris
tian News resources —America Stands (now Victory News) and
Flashpoint.
May 2017: Briefly, an Executive Order limiting the executive
enforcement of the Johnson Amendment allowing individuals
and religious organizations to speak about moral/political issues
from a religious perspective.
May2018: Moved U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. TheJerusalem
Post front page read: Promises made, Promises kept, thank you,
Mr. President.
January 2020: the Department of Education and Justice issues
guidance on constitutionally protected prayers and religious ex
pression in public elementary and secondary schools is protected
NOT unconstitutionally prohibited.
Under President Trump, taxes were lowered, economy was
strong, had record low employment, secured our borders, and
defended religious liberty.
Now for this administration and yes I am praying for them.
The Executive Orders: 11000 people laid off with closure of
the pipeline; 5000 people laid off due to shutting down the border
wall; and a potential 50,000 people being laid off with stopping
the drilling on Federal Lands. Billions of our tax dollars going
to foreign countries —most to Africa and South America—to
murder unborn babies and trust me Mr. Searles, God is taking
note. Title 9 which allows
male students who identify
with women the right to ac
cess their locker rooms and
compete as a woman. Finally,
States now have to waste
money suing the government
over unconstitutional execu
tive orders. I ask you, where
is the unity?
One thing you can be as
sured of Mr. Searles and that
is God is in control, taking
notice, and will respond in
His time. Thank God for
those ministers, evangelists,
and Christian workers you
mentioned in your article.
Praise God they hold true to
teaching/preaching the Word
and are not silent because
the Church has been silent
far too long. It’s time for all
Christians to be encouraged
to wake up, stand up, vote
up, speak up, pray up, and not
shut up for the sake of future
generations.
