Burke County’s Lady Bears
(11-3, 8-1) continue to play
solid basketball and picked
up three region victories last
week.
First, the girls defeated
Thomson 52-24 on Tuesday,
with Tre'yonna Jones earning
a double, double of 15 points
and 12 rebounds. She also had
5 steals on the night. Alayla
Denmark posted 9 points and
4 rebounds and earned 5 steals
to her name as well.
On Friday, Burke County
went toe-to-toe against Hep-
hzibah, defeating the Lady
Rebels 56-51. Jones was on top
of the leaderboard again with
17 points and 8 rebounds.Dan
ielle McClendon had 12 points

As the regular season comes
to an end for varsity basketball
at Edmund Burke Academy
and the region tourney ap
proaches, head coach Daniel
Hannah remains pleased and
optimistic with his players’
abilities despite a handful of
losses last week.
I felt like we improved over
the course of the game against
Augusta Prep and learned a
lot about ourselves as a team,”
Hannah said of the girls’ 63-
48 loss on Tuesday. “Kelsey
Jaquess did a great job on both
ends of the court. She had a
career high 22 points and did a
great job on the defensive end
for us. Morgan Clark led us in
rebounds again and I have been
pleased with Zaylie Baker's
improvement at running the
point for us.”
Jaquess’ points total includ
ed 4 three-pointers. She also
had 3 blocks on the night.
The Spartans began their
night on a promising note, pull
ing ahead of Prep 19-16 at the
end of the first quarter. Prep,
however, answered with 29
points in the second compared
to EBA’s 6, and the Spartans
just weren’t able to come back
from the deficient following
close third and fourth quarters.
They lost 78-53.
“We weren't able to maintain
our offensive output, and they
shot the ball extremely well,”
Hannah said, giving props to
junior Evan Hirschauer for a
solid contribution on offense.
“Carson Woods did a wonder
ful job on the boards for us as
well. We're starting to turn a
corner as a team, and if we can
keep everyone healthy, I think
we have a chance to make a
good run during the region
tournament.”
Hirschauer led the Spartans’
effort with 20 points, followed
by Woods who had 11 points
and 8 rebounds.
On Saturday, EBA hosted
Brentwood, with both the Lady
Spartans and Spartans falling
to the Eagles’ teams.
“Brentwood's girls are the
number one team, and any
time you can play a team of
their caliber, it can only serve
to be a good example for how
you want to play and how to
improve,” Hannah said. “Our
girls have started putting in
extra work and seeing how
other teams do that in order to
achieve their potential. Every
loss is an opportunity to learn
something about yourself so
that you learn how to improve.
I feel like a lot of our girls are
buying into the philosophy of
improving a little bit everyday
and as soon as we can get
everyone to truly believe that,
we've got the potential to have
a solid ball club.”
In the 72-31 loss, Clark
topped the leaderboard with
8 points, 14 rebounds and 2
steals.
According to Hannah, the
boys played one of their best
complete games against a very
good Brentwood team.
“I was particularly pleased
with the play of our point
guards Carson Woods and
Parker Oliver,” he said. “They
controlled the tempo for us and
allowed us to take care of the

Freshman Braydon Tindell
had a solid night from behind
the three-point line hitting 3
three-point shots. Our overall
rebounding effort was the best
we've given this entire season
as we out rebounded them 33

one team in our region, and I

that we can play with anybody

In the 65-57 loss, Woods
put up 17 points, 8 rebounds,
3 steals and 4 assists. Tindell
had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
