Last week the Bears returned
to the court after a COVID-19
quarantine, playing five games
in six days.
Though glad to be back,
head coach Purvis Dukes said
playing that many games in
quick succession was very dif
ficult and that the team is now
preparing for region and state
playoffs.
Last Monday, the Bears fell
73-60 to Harlem after lead
ing for most of the game. The
Bulldogs went on a 19-2 run in
the final 3 minutes to take the
win. Leading the Bears were
Bobby Little with 24 points
and 6 assists and James Mable
who had 16 points, 7 rebounds
and 6 blocks.
Little was 6/8 from the three-
point line.
On Tuesday, the Bears trav
eled to Morgan County where
they were defeated 79-72.
Dukes said the first quarter was
a killer for the Bears as they
gave up 30 points and trailed
30-11 at the half. Morgan
County hit 8 three-pointers in
the first quarter alone. Little
and Mable once again led the
effort, with Little garnering
27 points, including 7 three-
pointers, and Mable pulling
down 11 rebounds and collect
ing 5 blocks.
Thomson defeated Burke
County on Thursday 73-66
with Little contributing 25
points. Mable, who had 20
points, also recorded 9 re
bounds, 5 blocks and 3 steals.
Kobe Brown had 5 assists,
and Avian Allen contributed
3 steals.
“Friday was senior night
for us, and we wanted to send
the seniors out with a win
on their final regular season
home game,” Dukes said,
adding that the Bears did just
that with a 53-44 victory over
ARC. Little led with 21 points,
while Mable and Edward Wim
berly had 9 and 8, respectively.
On the night, the Bears were
14/17 from the foul line, which
Dukes said is a season best.
Little also had 2 steals, Mable,
2 blocks, and Brown, 5 assists.
Saturday wrapped up the
long week as the Bears fell 81 -
48 against Cross Creek.
“The guys were dead legged
from all week, and we were
playing one of the best teams
in AAA,” Dukes said.
Little and Mable each had
12 points. Mable also had 9
rebounds and 4 blocks while
Steffon Terrell had 7 rebounds.
Little had 3 steals, and Brown
led in assists with 6.
This week, the Bears made
it through the first round of
regionals after defeating ARC
41-36 at Harlem.
Little posted 16 points for
the Bears while Mable added
11. Little and Brown also had
4 assists apiece, and Mable had
10 rebounds and 5 blocks.
The Bears played in the
quarter finals against Thomson
at Morgan County on Tuesday
night, but results were not
available at press time. Dukes
said this game will determine
the Bears’ spot in the state
playoffs.

The Lady Bears (13-4,10-2)
finished their regular season
seeded in the number two spot
for the AAA region tourney.
The girls defeated both Mor
gan County and ARC last
week, but fell to Cross Creek
on Saturday.
In the 44-39 win over Mor
gan, Alayla Denmark led the
Lady Bears with 18 points
and 13 rebounds, followed by
Ja’Niyah Gardner who had 9
points and 4 steals.
A 53-14 victory over ARC
was powered by Chanteriea
Hankerson, 12 points and 4
steals; Tre’yonna Jones, 8
points and 5 steals; and Den
mark, 7 points,7 rebounds and
7 steals.
Dy’mon Webb and Hanker-

Bears’ 49-29 loss to Cross
Creek. Webb had 10 points and
2 rebounds, and Hankerson had
7 points and 7 rebounds.
“We wrapped up the number
two seed in region play with the
victory over Morgan county,”
head coach Leslie Lawrence
said. “We also got to celebrate
our senior class of Chanteriea
Hankerson, Janiya Brown and
Andreonia Sheppard. They
have been a pleasure coaching,
and we have enjoyed watching
them grow as young ladies and
basketball players over the last
four years. We wish them suc
cess in the next steps of their
lives.”
Up next, the Lady Bears play
at home Thursday, Feb. 18,
at 6 p.m. in the final four of
the region tourney. They will
okay either Morgan County
or the winner of the Harlem/
Hephzibah game. They have
also qualified for the state tour
nament, which will begin next
Tuesday. Who and where they
play is dependent upon results
during the region tourney.
