Diabetic retinopathy is the
leading cause of irreversible
blindness in working-age
Americans. Diabetic retinopa
thy develops in over 40% of the
people who develop diabetes.
Diabetic eye disease occurs
when small blood vessels leak
and bleed in the retina. The
retina is layer on the inside wall
of the eye that acts like the him
in a camera, where the eye is
the camera.
Most importantly, it is pos
sible to have diabetic reti
nopathy for a long time without
noticing symptoms until sub
stantial damage has occurred.
Once symptoms are noted, the
diabetic damage in the eyes is
Voting
citizens, thereby violating
their rights under the Equal
Protection Clause of the
Fourteenth as well as the
Fifteenth Amendment. The
Supreme Court in Rogers v.
Lodge affirmed and held that
the system of elections violated
the rights of African American
citizens by diluting their voting
power to keep whites in control
of county government.
The significance of this
Supreme Court decision not
only affected the citizens of
Burke County, Georgia but
other rural counties with large
black populations. African
Americans in numerous states
had been denied effective
representation due to what the
Supreme Court declared was
a violation of the Fourteenth
Amendment.
While we celebrate our
democratic freedoms, there
has been a continuous effort to
limit those freedoms especially
when it comes to voting. The
popular will often becomes
unpopular among those who
see themselves as losing power.
No-excuse absentee
voting was introduced in
Georgia by a Republican-
controlled legislature in 2005
when it appeared to be to
the party’s advantage. In the
2020 Presidential election,
Democrats took advantage of
absentee ballots to the chagrin
of their GOP adversaries.
Recently introduced bills in
Georgia by Republicans would
restrict absentee voting by
mail; require a photo ID for
those who vote absentee by
mail, ban ballot drop boxes
and block outside groups from
pendent Advisor Services.
‘Business owners, American
investors and industries at
large faced extraordinary chal
lenges throughout 2020. In the
advisor-mediated financial ad
vice market, investors showed
how much value they place on
a trusting relationship with a
financial advisor. We applaud
Shannon for her commitment
to clients and resiliency as a
business owner, and we are
inspired by her dedication to
making a meaningful impact in
the lives of her clients. It is an
honor to support Shannon and
wish her entire team continued
success as they continue to add
value for clients and in their
business in the years ahead.”

likely significantly progressed.
Signs of diabetic retinopathy
may occur in one or both eyes.
Symptoms may include
blurry vision, decreased color
vision, floaters, or shadow in a
part of vision. Anyone who has
diabetes is at risk of develop
ing diabetic eye disease. The
risk is higher if an individual
has diabetes for a longer time,
has poor control of blood sug
ars, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol or if an individual
is pregnant.
At least annual dilated eye
exams by an ophthalmologist
are recommended for indi
viduals with diabetes. An eye
physician can look for signs
of diabetes eye disease before
any vision loss occurs. In ad
dition, a dilated eye exam will
evaluate your vision, eye pres
sure (looking for glaucoma),
the front of the eye (eyelids,
cornea, checking for dry eye),
lens (looking for cataracts), as
well as a complete exam of the
retina and vitreous. In addition
to this exam, an OCT to ex
amine detailed cross-sectional
images of your retina, fundus
photographs and FA to check
the circulation in your retina
may be performed during your
visit.
There are many approved
treatments for diabetic reti
nopathy, including several
types of eye injections (through
the white part of the eye), laser
treatments, and vitreous and
retina surgery. These proce
dures can be done in an office
or surgery center to prevent,
treat, or reverse damage from
diabetes.
When more advanced (pro
liferative) diabetic eye disease
develops, this is treated with
laser along with eye injections.
Vitrectomy surgery (removal
of the vitreous) may be used
Continued from front
sending out absentee ballot
applications. Other proposals
would end automatic voter
registration when obtaining a
driver’s license and ban new
residents from voting in a
runoff election. There is an
expressed concern that unless
Republicans can limit votes
by Democrats they may lose
their statewide dominance. No
Republican official wants to
use words like “suppress the
vote.” Senate President Pro
Tempore Butch Miller, who
cosponsored the bills, argued
that these voting measures
"reassert confidence in an
election system which has lost
credibility with a majority of
Georgians." The real question
is which Georgians have lost
credibility. In the January run
off election, Rev. Warnock
received 97% of the Democrat
vote, 54% of Independents,
90% of Blacks, and 53% of
the Hispanics. According to
SurveyUSA, the only category
in which Warnock received
fewer votes than Loeffler
was the white vote. Loeffler
received 66% of the white vote
while Warnock received 30%.
For those familiar with
voting in America, it appears
to be a return to earlier days
when any and every method
was devised to discourage,
frustrate, and intimidate
African Americans. In 1964,
the issue of voter suppression
generated a Constitutional
Amendment with the banning
of the Poll Tax. Political parties
today are faced with new
realities as the composition of
the electorate changes. This
is something that all political
parties experience over time.
America of 2021 is not the
America of 1951 or even 2011
and if a political party wants to
survive, it must adapt. After
the Republican Party suffered
a devastating loss in 2012, it
produced a 100-page autopsy
as a guide to redirect the party’s
energy.
In 2016, in a throwback
election, the assessment from
2012 seemed distant and
discredited.
Donald J. Trump proved
that a Republican could win
without addressing minority
and immigrant concerns.
Trump’s victory was in fact a
big setback for the Republican
Party. While it did a great deal
for Trump, other Republican
victories in hindsight seem
small. Republican values
were replaced with Trump
values and many of those who
in the past saw themselves
as Republicans now became
“Trumpians.”
Americans in 2020 rejected
Trump by 7 million votes
giving him a big loss in the
popular and Electoral College
vote count. While older white
Republicans have a higher
voting rate, their numbers
reflect a significant loss in
membership. The nation needs
a vibrant two party political
system but for that to occur
requires the Republican Party
to embrace a diverse multi
ethnic and multi-racial society.
The question is whether 60% of
the Party faithful who support
Trump abandon their fears and
see themselves as part of a new
refashioned America.
