The Bears picked up three
wins in the past week, upping
their record to 3-3.
Against Jenkins County on
Feb. 23, the Bears shut out the
Eagles 6-0 as pitcher Marshall
Flowers didn’t allow a single
run.
“Marshall was terrific on
the mound,” said head coach
Billy Marchman. “Fie threw a
lot of strikes and the balls that
were not strikes were competi
tive pitches around the plate.
Fie relied on his defense, and
those gloves behind him played
well.”
Defensively, the Bears
turned a 5-4-3 double play, a
4-6-3 double play and their
catcher executed a backside
pick at second base, March-
man said. “Flowers also got
a few more ground balls and
quite a few pop ups that all
resulted in outs. Defensively
we played with only a single
error in the game, and Flowers
only walked 3 over 7 innings
of work.”
Offensively, Marchman said
the guys are still struggling
to produce runs as well as
the numbers of winners who
should be reaching first base.
“We had 7 singles, 7 walks,
2 reached on error and a hit by
pitch,” he said. “This totaled to
17 guys reaching first base, and
we added 7 stolen bases with
only scoring 6 runs. We have
to keep working on situational
hitting and playing more small
ball.”
Lead hitters were Jahkari
Floward, who had 2 singles,
an RBI, a walk and 2 stolen
bases; and Tripp Cibak, who
had 2 singles, an RBI, 2 runs,
2 walks and a stolen base.
On Saturday, the Bears host
ed Diamond Day and picked up
a 3-2 win against ECI and a 3-0
victory over Jefferson County.
Stats were not available at
press time.
The Bears traveled to Au
gusta to face Cross Creek on
Tuesday and will host the
Razorbacks this Thursday in
the Bear Den for a double-
header beginning at 5 p.m. On
Monday, March 8, they’11 be
on the road to Aquinas for a 6
p.m. game.

Four points made the differ
ence, and unfortunately, the
Lady Bears were at the lower
end of the spectrum.
The girls ended their basket
ball season last Tuesday, Feb.
23, after a 57-53 loss to Tattnall
County in the Georgia High
School Association Girls State
Basketball Tournament. They
finish with a 14-6,10-2 record
and second place in Region
4-AAA.
“We went on the road with
a game plan and came
up short,” Lady
Bears head coach
Leslie Lawrence
said following
the matchup.
“Our play
ers poured
every thing
they had
into this game and
also into this sea
son. We had our
opportunities to
overcome Tattnall; however,
we were not able to convert
when we needed to
most.”
Lawrence went
on to commend
her se-
n i o r
athletes
at the
conclusion
of their high
school bas
ketball careers.
“They have been
great all season, and
I commend them for their ef
forts. We have a stable nucleus
returning next year. We will
soon get back to work to be
come a better team and look
forward to the future.”
Against Tattnall, the Lady
Bears were lead by Alayla
Denmark who had 22 points
and 7 rebounds; Chanteriea
Hankerson, 8 points and 6
steals; and Ja’Niyah Gardner,
8 points and 5 steals.

first round of state

Edmund Burke’s varsity
basketball teams ended their
seasons in the first round of the
state playoffs last week.
The Lady Spartans fell 46-27
to Terrell Academy of Dawson
on Tuesday.
“We played well on the de
fense but couldn’t get it going
on the offensive end of the
floor,” said head coach Daniel
Hannah. “I was proud that we
were able to use our defense
to create offensive oppportuni-
ties, but we just weren’t able
to convert those opportunities
into points.”
Leading scorers with for the
night were Braelyn Reeves
and Marlee Mobley, and top
rebounders were Morgan Clark
and Kelsey Jaquess.
On Wednesday, the boys
were defeated 74-43 by Robert
Toombs.
“They did a great job early
on of executing our game plan
and kept the game close for
the first quarter and a half,”
Hannah said, adding that they
struggled to score on multiple
possessions and their shots
would not fall in the second
or third quarter, leading to
the game getting out of hand.
“The boys played hard and did
everything we asked them to
this season. I'm proud of their
effort and accomplishments.
The young guys in this group
have a chance to be a very
good group for us going
forward if they'll continue
to put in the work required
to achieve success.”
Carson Woods led the of
fensive effort with 11 points
while Parker Oliver and
Brantley Jones each had 8.
On the boards, Braxton Hop
per had 12 and Woods, 10.
Hannah added that the
EBA basketball program will
miss their seniors on both the
girls and boys teams. “They’ve
been a great group to coach
and have created so many
memories for myself and their
teammates.”

Wastewater System Name: City of Sardis WWTP
County: Burke
Date of Release: February 1/3, 2021
Contact Person: Jonathan M. Tindall, Contract Operator
Mailing Address: PQ Box 618
Blackshear, Georgia 31516
Phone: 912-449-0999 ext.105
Violation:
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division Water Quality
Division requires sampling of the City of Sardis Wastewater Treatment Facility for the analysis
of biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia, copper, and pH on a monthly
basis in its discharge to the Chandlers Branch tributary to Brier Creek tributary to the Savannah
River in the Savannah River Basin.
Due to inadequate treatment at the City of Sardis Wastewater Treatment Facility caused by lack
of settling, the facility experienced a release of inadequately treated effluent that exceeded the
weekly average Total Suspended Solids (TSS) by 1.5 times the allowable weekly average
concentration to the Chandlers Branch tributary to Brier Creek tributary to the Savannah River in
the Savannah River Basin. Extended stream sampling is being initiated and will continue for one
(1) year from the date sampling is initiated as required by the NPDES Permit. Normal stream
sampling as part of the discharge permit will also continue.
The local health department, media and legal organ have been notified as required. There are no
downstream water suppliers within twenty (20) miles of the spill site.
This violation does not pose a threat to the quality of any Georgia waterway. Residents
should not be alarmed. The supplier is taking corrective actions to insure that an adequate
wastewater program is maintained.
ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS VIOLATION SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO
THE CONTACT PERSON LISTED ABOVE.
