Attorney objects to
Stone’s appointment
ROY F. CHALKER JR.

Another Augusta attorney
has objected to the appoint
ment of Waynesboro’s Jesse
Stone to the Augusta Circuit
Superior Court bench.
Stone was sworn in by Gov.
Brian Kemp on Feb. 22 after
being appointed on Feb. 1 to
bll the post vacated by Judge
Michael Annis. Annis retired
on Feb. 1, 2020, but no re
placement was named until
Kemp appointed Stone a year
later.
Maureen O. Floyd filed a
petition in Burke County Su
perior Court Friday, March 5
which states that Kemp didn’t
have the legal authority to
make the appointment. She
basically contends that Kemp
waited too long to make the ap
pointment and that Annis’ post
should have been filled through
the election process.
Another Augusta attorney,
John B. Long, hied a similar
objection to the appointment
in an earlier letter to Geor
gia Secretary of State Brad
Raffensperger. Long demanded
that a special election be called
to determine the issue.

Spring is blooming, and
with those longer days full of
sunshine come stories inspired
by the season. Now is the time
for local students to hone those
writing skills and submit to
The True Citizen’s annual
spring creative writing contest.
Submissions for the contest
are now being accepted, and
we have three different writing
prompts for young writers to
choose from:
1. Imagine that Spring Fever
is a real person. What would
he/she look like? What would
he/she do?
2. Pretend that you are spring
cleaning the garage and
find an old wooden box.
When you open the box,
what do you find?
3. Imagine that you were
so tiny that grass was as tall
as trees, and you could use a
leaf as a blanket. Write a story
about your adventures outside.
Students should pick one of
the prompts and then wow us
with their story-telling skills.
Entries will be judged on read
ability, plot and originality.
They should be typed, no more
than 500 words and should
include the author’s full name,
grade, teacher and school.
Burke County students in pub
lic or private school (grades
third, fourth and fifth) are all
eligible to participate.
Entries must be submitted no
later than 5 p.m. Friday, March
26, and should be emailed to
jdianaroyal@gmail.com. You
may also drop off entries in the
box outside our office, located
at 629 Shadrack St. in Waynes
boro, or mail them to P. O. Box
948, Waynesboro, GA 30830.
Finalists’ stories will appear
in our Easter edition on March
31. Those entries will be posted
online for our readers to vote
on a winner. The student who
earns the most votes will win
an ice cream party, compli
ments of First National Bank
of Waynesboro.

School Board Appreciation Week
The Burke County Public
School System is joining in
a statewide celebration this
week to salute the efforts of
local school board members.
The week of March 15 -19, has
been proclaimed School Board
Appreciation Week in Georgia.
The weeklong observance calls
attention to the contributions of
local boards of education.
“Citizens elect board mem
bers to represent the com
munity’s voice on education
matters and to set the vision
for the school district,” said
Superintendent Dr. Angela
Williams. “Our board spends
countless hours fulfilling its
responsibilities and working
together to continually im
prove our education system.”
The men and women serving
our school district are chairman
Johnny Jenkins, 42 years; vice-
chairman Greg Chandler, 22
years; Lynn Crews, 12 years;
Dr. Ruby Saxon-Myles, 10
years; Jackie Payton, six years;
and Dr. Williams, serving her
first year as superintendent.
As constitutional officers of
Georgia, school board mem
bers are responsible for setting
educational policies, employ
ing the superintendent to pro
vide buildings and equipment,
operate a transportation system
and disbursing of school funds.
As community leaders, school
board members serve as advo
cates for the children in local
public schools and must study,
evaluate and decide what ac
tions are in the best interest of
those students.
The Georgia School Boards
Association (GSBA) sponsors
the celebration. The mission of
GSBA is to ensure excellence
in the governance of local
school systems by providing
leadership, advocacy and ser
vices, and by representing the
collective resolve of Georgia’s
elected boards of education.
Visit gsba.com for more infor
mation.
