The Bears picked up a set
of wins on the diamond in a
doubleheader against Cross
Creek last Friday and fell to
Aquinas on Monday.
Burke County got game one
against the Razorbacks rolling
when Jahkari Floward doubled
on a 3-2 count in the first in
ning to open up scoring. In the
second, the Bears put up three
more runs that paved the way
to their 6-1 victory.
Howard was one of the
team’s lead hitters for the
game, earning 2 RBIs, 2 runs
scored and 3 stolen bases in
addition to his double.
Evan Richardson hit a dou
ble, scored 3 runs and stole 4
bases.
Tripp Cibak and Jed Osborne
each had two singles.
In 5.1 innings on the mound,
Richardson allowed 2 hits, 3
walks and a run and struck
out 7. Marshall Flowers had 2
strikeouts along with allowing
3 hits and 3 walks.
The Bears took game two
with a final score of 6-2.
Lead hitters were Chris Bux
ton with a double, a single and
2 runs scored; Richardson,
a single, a run, 2 walks and
a stolen base; and Beckam
Ramirez, a single, 2 RBIs and
a run scored.
Phillip Hodges threw a com
plete, 7-inning game, allowing
7 hits, 2 walks and 2 runs while
striking out 10.
“We were able to score
enough runs to secure our
first two region wins against
Cross Creek,” head coach Billy
Marchman said. “Our pitching
staff was very sharp throughout
the doubleheader. Defensively,
we turned a double play in both
games. Offensively, we left
seven runners on base in game
one with only two hits with
runners in scoring position. We
were aggressive on the bags
with eleven for twelve in stolen
base opportunities.”
On Monday night, the Bears
traveled to SRP Park where
they were defeated 5-2 by
Aquinas High School.
Top hitters were Tripp Cibak,
2singles, RBI and run scored;
Richardson, double, single,
reach on error; Ramirez, single,
run scored, stolen base; and Jed
Osborn, double, walk.
Flowers allowed 4 hits, 3
walks and 5 runs in 4.2 innings
and threw 3 strikeouts. Howard
closed the game, allowing no
hits over the inning and strik
ing out 4.
“This was a game in the box
score we are supposed to win,”
Marchman said, adding that
the Bears outhit Aquinas 8 to
4 and had 1 error compared to
Aquinas’ 2.
“Our error came in the fifth
inning with two outs and run
ners on first and second with
a misjudged fly ball to center-
held that led to an inside the
park home run followed by the
next batter hitting a solo home-
run,” he said. “The mistake was
a four-run swing on the score
board. We also had two big
base running mistakes that cost
us from scratching runs during
the contest. We simply beat
ourselves. We pitched the ball
and hit well enough to win but
just were a little unlucky. Base
ball can be a game of inches
sometimes with one mishap
changing the outcome. It was
a fun experience as the team
got to play under the lights at
SRP Park.”
Up next, Burke County plays
Washington County in Sander-
sville on Thursday, March 11,
beginning at 6 p.m. They’ll
host Harlem Tuesday, March
16, at 5:30 p.m.

Tennis season has begun in
the Bear Den, and Burke Coun
ty players are hoping for a great
season after being stopped last
year due to COVID-19.
So far the Bears have had
two matches, and head coach
Laurie Dickey says they com
peted well.
Against Statesboro, both the
girls and boys teams lost 0-5.
“They are a non-region
match, and it is important for
our players to be exposed to
competitive teams,” she said.
“This helps to give them prac
tice for when we hopefully
make it to state. I am proud
of how they competed against
them.”
The girls won 5-1 against
Edmund Burke.
“EBA had a strong number
1 player, and Doris Cross did
a great job making her move
around the court,” Dickey said.
“They had some long rallies,
and all of the girls should be
happy with how they played.”
Dickey went on to share her
thoughts on the season ahead.
“I feel as though we should
do well in the region,” she said.
“We have a lot of young talent
on the boys side. I am excited
to see Samuel Eckerman and
Jacob Boothe fill their roles
as first year starters. Everyone
is working great together and
putting forth a lot of effort at
practice. Many of our starters
are returning players which is
very helpful since we can try to
pick up where we left off last
year. It was tough not having a
season due to COVID, but they
are all motivated and ready to
