Though the auction will take

due to COVID-19, the buzz of
excitement is just as big and
the donations as unique and
generous as ever before.
Edmund Burke Academy’s
annual Spartan Rock Auc
tion begins online this Friday,
March 19, at 7 a.m. and will
continue through to 9 p.m. that
same evening.

The school’s PTO (Parent
Teacher Organization) ex

contributions from businesses
and individuals who make the
auction possible each year.
“We are extremely grateful
for the generous donations and
support from area businesses,”
said a spokesperson for the

Burke County Medical Center
received $10,000 through the Georgia
Rural Hospital Tax Program.
The Georgia Rural Hospital
Tax Program recently awarded
14 hospitals a total of $ 140,000
through a donation made by
Windham Brannon. Burke
Medical Center, Union Gen
eral Hospital and Washington
County Regional Medical Cen
ter are included on the recipient
list for the funds.
The hospital’s Business De
velopment Director Robin
Cole said the money will be
applied toward operations
expenses.
The General Assembly
passed The Georgia Rural
Hospital Tax Credit Program
to address the issue of rural
hospital instability. Taxpayers
receive an income tax credit
for contributions to any of the
state’s qualified rural organiza
tions.
While rural Georgia faces a
lack of access to basic medical
care, nine rural hospitals have
closed since 2008, according
to Becker’s Hospital Review.
Windham Brannon works
with the hospitals to identify
process inefficiencies that lead
to revenue loss. COVID-19
added to the institutions’ fi
nancial woes, as they already
experienced loss of revenue
caused in-part by billing and
coding errors.
Burke County Medical Cen
ter will not be working in
partnership with Windham
Brannon, according to Cole.
In order to gain final eligibil
ity for the program, the Depart
ment of Community Health re
quires rural hospitals to submit
a five- year plan, along with
other documentation.
Cole said the Burke County
Medical Center has received
several donations this year.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention changed
its visitation recommendations to include in-person visits.
While the Centers for Medi
care and Medicaid Services
and the CDC recently released
updated long-term care visita
tion recommendations and
guidance, the Governor’s Shel-
ter-in-Place (SIP) Executive
Order for medically fragile and
elderly Georgians is still in ef
fect through March 31,2021.
“This order restricts visita
tion and we must abide by
this order,” Nurse Amy Abel
said of Brentwood Health and
Rehabilitation.
“The Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services (CMS),
in collaboration with the Cen
ters for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), issued up
dated guidance today for nurs
ing homes to safely expand
visitation options during the
COVID-19 pandemic public
health emergency (PHE),”
according to a March 10 press
release.
The changes come as more

vaccines have been adminis
tered within nursing homes
throughout the country.
Facilities may allow indoor
visitation, for all residents, re
gardless of vaccination status,
except when the COVID-19
county positivity rate is greater
than 10 percent and less than
70 percent of residents in the
facility are fully vaccinated,
the press release said.
COVID-19 may continue to
delay changes in Burke Coun
ty. According to the Georgia
Department of Public Health,
the county’s positivity rate
remained at more than 10% for
the weeks between February
18 - March 3.
Other in-person visitation
exceptions include when resi
dents have a confirmed CO-
VID-19 infection or are quar
antined. However, “compas
sionate care” visits should be
allowed at all times, according
to the CDC.
CMS continues to recom-
judicial circuit from Richmond
and Burke Counties.
SB 9 says that Burke County
will remain a part of the Augusta
Judicial Circuit. In response,
Burke County commissioners
requested a delay in action on
the bill. The commissioners’
resolution said that logistical
and fiscal impacts of the bill
mend physical distancing and
conducting visits outdoors
whenever possible.
Assistant Manager Jessica
Brown said Brown Personal
Care Home, 554 Idlewood Rd,
continues to conduct visitations
the same way it has throughout
the pandemic. Visitations take
place outside while guests wear
masks. Outdoor visits have
worked well for the assisted
living facility.
“Everything is going good,”
Brown said.
Prolonged isolation and sep
aration from family presented
an emotional and physical toll
during the pandemic, Chief
Medical Officer Lee Fleisher
said in the press release.
“As you can see, our center is
currently in a challenging posi
tion,” Abel said. “While we
would love to open the doors
to everyone, it is our responsi
bility to protect the health and
well-being of our patients and
our staff.”
Continued from front
must be studied in order to
determine the most effective
way to provide court services
in each of the three counties.
During the meeting, council
members recognized Fire Chief
Ronnie Baxley for 45 years of
service.
