Of its three matches last
week, the Burke County High
School tennis team faced one
region foe and easily took
down both the girls and boys
of Cross Creek, 5-0.
“They had a young team, but
our players worked quickly to
close out the matches,” head
coach Laurie Dickey said,
adding that the Bears also beat
Jenkins County (boys, 5-0 and
girls, 4-1) with only the first
girls doubles earning a loss.
“During this match, we start
ed some of the new players in
order to give them some match
experience,” she said. “That is
the best way to help them learn
and get them comfortable on
the court.”
While the Bears fell 1-4
against Screven, Dickey says
they went into it knowing
their opponents are great com
petitors. “I am really proud of
how the team did against them
though,” she said. “They had
a lot of great points and long
rallies. The second doubles
team of Samuel Eckerman and
Jacob Boothe, as well as Doris
Cross at first singles, were
the wins for us overall. Their
efforts should definitely be
commended. The boys worked
really well together. They com
municated and tried to work on
things we have been focusing
on during practice. Doris got
into a groove and did a great
job of moving her opponent.
She also hustled the entire
match and had a very com
plete game that finally came
together for her. I am happy to
see improvement by all players
this week in both practice and
matches. I hope they keep up
the momentum and continue
making progress.”
The Bears had a match
against Davidson Tuesday,
but results were not available
at press time. They’ll travel to
Harlem for a match on Thurs
day, host Thomson Tuesday,
March 23 and play Davidson
again at Newman Tennis Cen
ter Wednesday, March 24. All
matches are at 4 p.m.

A four-hit day for Beckham
Ramirez helped the Burke
County Bears earn a whooping
21-9 victory over Washington
County on Thursday.
The sophomore singled in
the first, second, third and
fourth innings, brought in 6
RBIs and 2 runs and added a
stolen base.
Offensively, the Bears were
on fire.
“We worked extremely
hard at practice Tuesday and
Wednesday after a Monday
night loss to Aquinas in which
we did not situational hit well
enough to win,” head coach
Billy Marchman said. “We
focused hard in order to get
better at putting the ball in play
and to situational hit more. We
executed extremely well over
the five innings with a lot of
traffic on the bags.”
The Bears had 20 at-bats
with runners in scoring posi
tion and chalked up 11 hits.
They recorded 5 hits with 2
outs that resulted in RBIs.
Marchman said they had a
total of 31 quality at-bats with
9 at-bats going 6-plus pitches.
“While improving our contact
rate and putting runners in
motion with adding 11 stolen
bases, we as a group had an
excellent night,” he said.
In addition to Ramirez, the
Bears leading hitters were
Chris Buxton, triple, single,
reach on error, 3 RBIs, run
scored, walk; Tripp Cibak, 3
singles, RBI, 3 runs scored,
walk, 2 stolen bases, hit by

2 singles, 4 RBIs, run scored,
stolen base.
On the mound, Myles Heat-
wole earned the win, pitching
just over two innings and al
lowing only 3 hits. He had 2
walks, 2 strikeouts, 4 runs and
2 earned runs.

gusta Eagles at home today
(Wednesday) at 6 p.m. and
