Bears fall to Harlem
in three-game series

Harlem got the best of Burke
County in a three-game series
that culminated Friday night
with a doubleheader that lasted
nearly eight hours.
The Bears began the week
with a Tuesday game against
Harlem that leaned in favor of
the Bulldogs 7-2.
According to head coach
Billy Marchman, they fell be
hind early in the ballgame and
weren’t able to recover.
“We had 17 quality at bats
but never got the big hit in this
one, going 2 for 11 with run
ners in scoring position,” he
said. “It’s hard to beat teams
as good as Harlem when not
putting the ball in play with
runners in scoring position. We
out hit Harlem 7 to 6 and we
both reached base on 4 walks
each but they had hits with
runners on base and that was
the difference.”
Top hitters were Jahkari
Howard, 2 singles, 1 run
scored, 1 walk and 2 sto
len bases; and Jed Osborn, 2
singles.
Marshall Flowers and How
ard split time on the mount,
with Flowers going 4 innings
and giving up 3 hits and 2
walks. He also had 4 strikeouts,
3 runs and 1 earned run. How
ard, who pitched 3 innings, had
3 hits, 2 walks, 1 strikeout, 4
runs and 3 earned runs.
On Friday, the two teams
meet for a rematch on the
Bulldogs’ home held, with the
Bears taking game one 4-2, and
Harlem stealing an 8-7 victory
in the nail-bitter finale.
Marchman said due to extra
innings in both games, they
played for 7 hours and 36
minutes.
In game one, they were
deadlocked at 2 going into the
tenth inning, and Chris Buxton
singled on a 1-0 count, scoring
one run.
“He was 0-4 until his last
at bat, which was the one that
took him from zero to hero,”
Marchman said. “He provided
just what the seniors are asked
to provide which is compete
until it is over and never give
up no matter how bad of day
you are having just. He was
rewarded because his mentality
never disassembled.”
Starting pitcher Phillip
Hodges pitched a near perfect
game over 8 2/3 innings, re
cording a strikeout and just 2
walks. “He hit his spots like
a magician and got the op
ponent to ground out and fly
out to keep his pitch count
low,” Marchman said, “which
allowed him to cruise and not
labor so hard throughout the
marathon of a game.”
Howard was the lead hitter
with a triple, a single, one run
scored, 2 walks and a stolen
base; Flowers had a triple, a
single and 2 runs scored.
The final game came down
to the last play when a Harlem
batter singled on a 3-2 count,
scoring the one run the Bull
dogs needed to claim victory.
“We really should have won
the game as we left 13 runners
on base with 24 quality at bats
but never got clutch hits,”
Marchman said. “Tripp Cibak
had the only 2 clutch hits with
both coming with 2 outs that
recorded RBIs. Seth Meador
executed a perfect straight steal
to steal home on the catcher
that wasn’t paying close atten
tion, which tied the game. The
scoreboard was tied at 7 a piece
after 5 innings and neither of
us scored again until extra in
nings. Two things we did not
do well in this game is that we
left too many runners while
striking out too many times in
clutch at bats. The second is
we walked too many batters,
giving them more baserunning
opportunities to score runs. I
will say that Daniel Brown on
the stat sheet will not get the
credit he deserves with the role
that he played. He worked his
tail off behind the plate, and I
was very proud of his defensive
performance along with his grit
to continue the fight no matter
how long we had to play.”
Jed Osborn led the offensive
effort with a double, single,
RBI, run and walk.

LEHER TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
I am hearing lots about Burke County trash arrangements.
The article concerning the discussions that are needed, I felt
left off some items.
First, when I go to the dumpsters in reality 9 out of 10 times
it is well kept up. That is when we do not notice. The county
employees are for sure attempting to do a good job. Thank you.
My suggestion is to put "decorative" fencing around them so
the unsightly dumpsters would be hidden from view but leave it
open enough for public viewing so people are less likely to dump
items that are not to be dumped.
Make sure the rules of what can be put in cans are clear and
then enforce it.
A couple of fines the word will get out
Then maybe twice a year have an open dump day where any
thing can be brought. This may help from roadside dumping.
What we need is some community pride and common sense.
Thanks,
Don Veldboom
