Face-to-Face learning makes
a comeback this summer

Burke County Public
Schools announced its sum
mer school plans.
The summer school schedule
runs June 1-24 from 8 a.m. to
2:15 p.m. for all grades.
Students will receive recom
mendations from their current
schools’ principals. There is
a limited amount of space,
therefore students with low
assessment scores and those
who need a boost to reach the
next learning level will have
preference. Transportation will
be provided. There is no fee
to attend. The school system
provides breakfast and lunch.
The curriculum will target
students’ specific trouble areas.
“There are several assess
ments built in and we have
more in-house data that we
can use to determine exactly
what they need to be
working on,” Super
intendent Angela Wil
liams said.
The classes will be
held face-to-face. Part
of the goal is to rein
force skills that many
students fell behind in
during the pandemic.
Online learning and
quarantine disruptions
presented a less-than-
ideal learning envi
ronment.
“Some kids just do
not learn that way,”
Superintendent Williams said
of online learning. “They need
to be in a collaborative situa
tion working with other kids,
talking things out.”
Children benefit from ask
ing questions and hearing the
answers to questions asked by
other students. The in-class
structure reduces distractions,
