EBA middle school baseball
They may be young, but they are mighty. The Edmund Burke Academy middle school baseball
team finished its season undefeated, going 13-0. “We all had a great time this season,” said
coach Aaron Phillips, who has commented often about what a special group of young men
this team is comprised of. “They are the kind of kids we look forward to coaching, and they are
showing us how good the future looks for EBA baseball."

encourages youth to enhance
their skills in decision-making,
critical thinking, problem solv

member.
“What a delight it was to see
young people back in person
to compete in a dairy event.
The quality of the youth at this
contest was ever present from
their placings to discussing
those placings during reasons
set,” said Jillian Bohlen, UGA
associate professor and dairy
Extension specialist. “I com
mend them as well as their
coaches on their commitment
to dairy youth activities.”
Senior participants in grades
nine through 12 reviewed
classes to place the differ
ent dairy cattle into specific
classes and provided three sets
of reasons providing explana
tions for their placings. Junior
participants in grades four
through eight viewed classes
for placement and provided
one set of reasons explaining
their placements.
Youth compete individually
for high individual and as a
team through the combination
of the top county individuals.
All participants received an
award pin for participation.
The top three individuals and
top three team members will
receive medallions, and a team

BCHS CyberPatriot team wins second
A team of students from
Burke County High School in
Waynesboro, Georgia recently
concluded an exceptional sea
son of CyberPatriot - the Air
Force Association’s National
Youth Cyber Defense Com
petition.
Established by AFA in 2009,
the CyberPatriot National
Youth Cyber Education Pro
gram is designed to excite, edu
cate, and motivate students to
ward careers in cyber security
and other science, technology,
engineering and mathematics
(STEM) disciplines critical to
our nation’s future.
CyberPatriot’s core pro
gram - the National Youth
Cyber Defense Competition
- challenges teams of stu
dents across the United States,
Canada, and other schools
abroad, to find and resolve
cybersecurity vulnerabilities in
simulated environments. The
CyberPatriot Office has made
modifications to the National
Youth Cyber Competition to
ensure the health and safety
of the students throughout the
COVID-19 pandemic. During
the CyberPatriot XIII season
during the 2020-2021 school
year, CyberPatriot extended
the registration period by a few
weeks to allow for more time
for team formation since many
schools were facing virtual or
hybrid school learning models.
One of the three rounds of
competition was eliminated
to allow students more time to
create their teams to accom
modate teams that could not
gather together to compete
due to virtual only or hybrid
learning models. CyberPatriot
also modified the rules that
allowed teams to compete in
a variety of settings including
students competing from their
homes. The top teams from the
preliminary online rounds earn
a place at the Virtual National
Finals Competition, where
students compete for national
recognition and scholarships.
The CyberPatriot field is
divided into three divisions
- the Open Division for pub
lic, private, and home school
teams, the All Service Division
for JROTC, Civil Air Patrol,
and Naval Sea Cadet Corps
teams, and the Middle School
Division. Based on the results
from previous rounds, Cyber
Patriot XIII high school teams
were categorized within their
divisions as Platinum, Gold,
or Silver Tier teams, with Plati
num Tier teams representing
the highest scoring teams.
In all, more than 4,800 teams
registered to compete in Cy
berPatriot XIII. Led by Coach
George Edwards and Mentor
Jeremy Atkins, the team of
students from Burke County
High School excelled in the
qualifying rounds, demonstrat
ing teamwork, critical thinking
skills, and technical knowledge
key to a successful career in
cybersecurity. The team’s per
formance earned it a spot in the
Semifinal Round, during which
it outscored other teams to win
2nd place overall/among teams
in the Silver Tier of the Open
Division.
The Burke County Bears
team had a great year and the
team looks forward to compet
ing in the future.
Top teams in the Open and
All Service Divisions’ Plati
num Tier are set to compete in
the CyberPatriot XIII Virtual
National Finals Competition
on March 19-21.
